Well, yeah. Jesus cast out demons from people. The spirits of Moses and Elijah appeared to Jesus, Peter, James, and John. Christ's spirit appeared to the women outside his tomb, and also to Saul of Tarsus on the road to Damascus.
Has your mom read the Bible? There is evidence of a spirit world throughout the New Testament.
It is inadvisable for anyone to "dabble" in that realm, though. Demons are much more powerful than we are and will inevitably delude, drain, and darken us.

The Bible testifies to the existence of demons who take hold of someone's body (or animals - see pigs).
So, yes, I believe Satan can overcome an willing participant. Many who practice the "dark arts" do so for fun, only to end up being in literal communication with him.
He cannot, however, gain control over the Holy Spirit, who indwells Christians. Nor can he stand to be in the presence of a Christian. He will leave when commanded to, in Jesus' name.

I'm a Christian I believe that the Bible clearly teaches that there is spiritual "realm" and spiritual beings. Their really are angels and there really are demons (fallen angels). People can really be spiritually oppressed and also demon possessed. These are not my own opinion but is what is found in scripture. Now regarding the spirits of humans coming to haunt the bible speaks nothing regarding that. But it does speak of witchcraft and mediums (people who "willfully" channel spirits". It also speaks of holy angels the protect and fight for God's people and God's cause.

I believe as we exist an unseen world exist along side us. I do not believe most of the encounters people claim. As a general rule I don't believe these unseen things have the power to come and go as they please. I also believe when the encounters occur they are always for a purpose and never because of aimless wanderings.

psychiatry calls them hallucinations. i think your mom is right and you should believe her. she is not crazy like the rest of the believers, but then again, christians are just as freaky believing in afterlife and the return of jesus.
