My middle daughter was a thumb sucker. We never did break her of it, she had to do it herself. We tried a rewards chart, but that didn't work since she sucked her thumb in her sleep. We tried several types of nasty tasting stuff applied to her thumb, she developed a liking for all of them. We tried keeping a band aid on her thumb, she took it off. We bought a plastic thumb guard and taped it on her thumb, but she figured out how to take it off and put it back on. We developed a hand signal so she would know to stop without us saying anything out loud so she wouldn't be more embarrassed in public. The thumb sucking behavior was something she did without realizing she was doing it. Both her doctor and her pediatrician talked to her about potential problems with her teeth (she has great teeth and never needed braces). At about 8 years old, she began sucking her thumb considerably less in public, but continued to suck it in private and at bed time or when upset or sad. She is 22 now and will only say that she "was pretty old" when she stopped sucking her thumb. Nothing we ever did got her to stop.

My 7 year old also still sucksher finger. I have tried all the obvious solutions. I have done the reward thing, the punishment thing, the icky tasting thing, the Dentist thing, nothing has helped. I have been told by a professional that she has to break this herself, and unfortunately it will probably be when a peer sees her and makes fun. If you find a solution, i sure do want in on it! Good Luck!

my cuz used to suck her thumb at 7 and the way we stopped her was by rewarding her for every few days she didn't suck it she got 50p, we did that for a month and eventually she gave over. also you can buy some stuff from the chemist that you use to stop biting your nails, it tastes nasty so if you put this on she might give over.
hope this helped

A dentist or an orthodontist can put a temporary appliance on the roof of your daughter's mouth that would interfere with the thumb fitting comfortably into her mouth. It worked for my daughter. Good luck.
