Wood variety are many.It depends upon the region where you stay and the varieties available there. Local variety rates will vary from the imported ones. It will also depend upon your requirements...doors and windows or furniture ...and useage too. You need to specify what exactly you have in mind and where you reside.Unless, you are asking a GK question.

you need to use a 'Sanding Sealer" on the wood first. This will help with the wood not absorbing too much of the stain and will also fill in some small imperfections int he wood. When dry do another light sanding with 150grit paper. Then uses a "tack" rag to remove all small dust. i would use a WALNUT colored stain that you brush on then wipe off. Int he areas where you have used the filler, take the brush with stain and blend in the grain marks in the grain direction, so that the plugged area is not noticeable. Do not wipe that area and let it dry (8 hours min if using an oil based stain). Once everything is dry use a "marine" polyurethane for the final finish.(2 or 3 thin coats) sanding with 100grit after the first coat is dry. (24 hours to dry) You will have a very hard, durable, long lasting and beautiful finish for your computer rack.

Barring a few, almost all type of wood is used in making furniture. It all depend upon the type of furniture and personal choice according the pocket which type of wood one is going to use for a particular job.
