Little white rice looking things? Those are Alveoli, which is LUNG TISSUE that never grows back! I would see why you are coughing those up, whether it be an untreated infection or some other illness.

Please go see a doctor.

Hmm...I'm not sure who we should believe, Dustin, but I've been having the same problem during the winter when my immune system is down. One time when it was particularly bad, I went into the doctor and got tested. He told me I've had strep throat..so perhaps these deposits are streptococcus related??
I think that the strep throat virus is still in my body -- it is just that most of the time it isn't active.

When you feel like you have the deposits in your throat, or you feel the need to cough, go look in a mirror at the back of your throat with a very bright light. You will see two tiny holes in the back of your throat. I assume that these are the tonsils?? That's exactly where these deposits are coming from. You may notice that these tiny white things come from just one hole or the other (right or left).

I think you are describing tonsil stones (tonsilloliths) that is caused in part by food particles, debris, and bacteria being trapped in the little tonsil crevices. After awhile these little deposits become hard and white, they can come loose, and you can cough them up. If they are bothersome you can gargle with salt and warm water before bedtime.

Maybe yeast?? I think you need to send your sputum for culture, to see what is really growing there. Smelly is bad.
