Hello, for anyone who have read The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, can you please explain to me what this simile it's talking about/what it means?

"Holding Cholly as a model of sin and failure, she bore him like a crown of thorns, and her children like a cross."

This simile is found in the Spring Chapter where Pecola's mother, Pauline, is telling about her life, how she came to marry Cholly, and when she gave birth to her children.

Pauline must be practically a saint because she takes a very Christlike self-sacrificing approach to her husband and children. The word "long-suffering" springs to mind.
It's a reference to Jesus being beaten and marched through the streets to his execution, dragging his heavy cross, wearing a bloody crown of thorns. Christ never cursed or complained. Can Pauline say the same?
