Nearly all cleaning products are harmful in some way, to people and to animals. Often it's the inert ingredients which are the most harmful -- if a substance is found to be dangerous, then it gets 'reformulated' and labelled 'inert' because inert ingredients aren't regulated in the same way that 'active' ingredients are. Think about that carefully.
Also keep in mind that safety levels are tested on healthy adult men. Pets and children have smaller bodies and spend more time on the floor, so they'll take in proportionally more per weight. Cleaning products are also connected to asthma and other health problems.
The bottom line is, do you really need to take that sort of chance? The old-fashioned ways work just as well and are significantly cheaper.

The reason this rumor started because the swifter solution has some of the same ingredients as windsheild washer fluid. Normal use is perfectly safe pending your dogs own allergies. But use your head same as all cleaners, do not let the dog at the full bottle.;)

I recently recieved an email from a friend about this subject. It said that animals were dying from the solution from the swifter. Something about it says on it can be harmful to children or animals. I don't have one, so I can't read the box. But, with any cleaner you need to be careful.

I have used Swifter products in my home and I have many cats. They are fine. It hasn't harmed them yet. I guess that is just a rumor. Check out the link.

From the Swiffer Site:
Safe for animals?
Question
Is Swiffer safe for animals? What if my pet licks the floor or his paws?
Answer
Your pet will be fine if it licks its paws after walking on a newly wet floor mopped with WetJet or Wet cloths. You can always offer water or milk to help remove the perfume taste from your pet’s mouth. But even drinking large amounts of the Swiffer solution would not be expected to cause more than temporary and minor intestinal upset.

I,ve heard some breeds are so sensitive to cleaners ,household sprays like room deoderizers ,I have many pets so i use natural products as possible, although vinegar doesn,t smell good it does remove oders and dirt well.the smell fades in a short time.

just remember that animal's senses are greater then our own. your better off using all natural items. only water would be safer if you can get away with just that
