Cover them in vaseline and leave for awhile(dont let them lick!) Then twist them out!
My sister swears by rubbing peppermint oil on them.

If you find a tick on your dog the easiest way to get rid of it is to use a tick remover, which can be bought from pet shops or your vet. It's an L-shaped piece of plastic with 2 prongs on one end which fit round the tick. Once you've got the tick trapped, you then twist the remover anti-clockwise to 'unscrew' the mouthparts which are attached into your animal's skin. Try not to just pull the tick out, you run the risk of leaving the mouthparts in the animal's skin, which can then cause a reaction or abscess.
For prevention of ticks, ask your vet about products which are designed to repel them. You can get spot-on treatments which last around a month, or collars which prevent the tick attaching to your animal's skin. If you walk your dog in fields with long grass or near where sheep graze they are at risk of picking up the odd tick.

there are lots of ways to get rid of ticks but you have to be very careful not to leave the head in as this can cause an infection. you can burn the tick with a lit cigarette if you leave the cigarette on the tick (not on the dogs skin) long enough it should fall out. another way is to put Vaseline all around the tick and wait for it to slip out. they both work but the cigarette one is quicker. try using front line in future it kills ticks and fleas you can get it from the vets only and it is really good stuff.

If you're in the UK and its a sheep tick (like a green pea) then just smear it with oil and let it drop off itself. Ticks breathe through pores in their skin and suffocate if you coat them with vaseline or vegetable oil.If you pull it off you risk leaving the head behind and it will form a sore.
But if you use Frontline for fleas it also kills ticks so you don't have to do anything.
If you live in the States, some types of tick are extremely serious, and will inject enough poison to kill the dog if disturbed; see a vet.

You need to put surgical spirit on the tick wait a few seconds and then pluck the thing out with a good hard yank.
Then examine the tick and make sure that you took all of it and not left the head behind or else you can end up with an infection.(well not you exactly ..the dog)

We had a problem with ticks on our dog on a family holiday once. We messed about with lit matches and vaseline and meths, and it really didn't do the job. A local vet told us that the very best way to remove them is to take a firm grip on the body, and pull - not hard enough to rip them out (this causes the head to be left in, infection, etc), but hard enough to let the little buggers know you are there. The tick will find holding on far too much effort and will release its evil grip. You can them take your revenge on it as cruelly as you wish...
I know it sounds much too easy to be true, but give it a go!

you can buy this wee contraption that looks like a pair of tweezers that you use to put in to the part of the skin where the tic is and pull it out, and straight after doing that i would instantly put some bob martin flea and tic treatment on your dog, its only 2.99 from all good pet shops, you apply it to the nape of yout dogs neck then to the bottom of the back just about where its tail starts, really good stuff x

give it a squirt with frontline spray and after a day remove it with a tick remover. It'll be dead by then but still attached.
My cats are always getting them and this is how the vet told me to remove them.

A Ticktwister does the trick very well and is available from most good pet shops. It is far better than the gin and rubber glove technique and saves on a trip to the vet.
