None - its not fair on the dog to use them solely as guard dogs. Any dog treated properly will guard its territory.

Now there is a contentious issue- we could be here all night.
There are many breeds that should be good guard dogs but have suffered severely at the hands of the show fraternity. The dogs started to be selected for type not function, as such the original guard ability has been reduced.
A classic example is the Doberman Pinscher. There are still some very good lines, indeed the US has been one of the better countries at maintaining the ability.
In the UK there are many more soft lines, and some of them look like donkeys they are so large.
Size doesn't determine a decent guard dog either. It stands to reason that a large dog will have more man-stopping potential but smaller guards can harass an intruder and create enough of a racket to send them running.
The best small guard dog is probably the Schipperke- usually all black, with no tail and often used to guard barges back in the dim, distant past.
The German Pinscher is an excellent medium-sized guard dog but only if you get one from decent lines- normally German blood rather than Dutch.
The Bull Terrier can also make a decent guard but it depends on the bloodline and how the animal is raised.
The best large guard is probably the Canary Dog- i have a friend who is very knowledgeable on mastiffs and he is convinced they are the best large/giant guard dog available.
Rotweillers are still good too, as long as sourced from decent lines.
I would disagree with the person who stated German Shepherd- they are an overbred, failing type and the Welsh police force stopped using them as they were becoming so unreliable and soft.
Of course there are some very tough ones but they are becoming rarer.
I would also disagree with the person who says forget it as a burglar can sue. At the end of the day if your dog goes mental when he hears a strange noise and the burglar knows there is a very good chance he will be badly bitten- he is far more likely to leave it. Burglars want an easy ride, they don't want to be attacked by dogs!

If you mean to Guard You or Your Home, Forget it anyway. If some-one breaks in and is attacked by your dog whether it is a little Pomeranian Or a German Shepherd you could find yourself in court! The burglar CAN SUE! Not FAIR but TRUE! Even if you have a Clear Warning that the Dog is There!
Only certain groups can keep 'Guard Dogs' Prisons and the Military are two. Police dogs are NOT guard dogs, they are trained to respond aggressively or catch someone in a specific way. They also have to be gentle and good natured as they may be used on a search for a missing child/person.
Breeds like The German Shepherd were bred to guard the flock whereas Collies were bred to Work with the Sheep. So any dog that was bred to Guard is more likely to Guard (unfortunately too aggressively sometimes) Dobermans and Rottwiellers are another two but you NEED to KNOW how to HANDLE a Dog like that! They are not the easiest breeds to own.
Treat any dog properly even a mongrel and they should protect you just by being with you and most would warn off intruders by barking too.
Before getting a dog of any kind learn as much as you can in general and then choose a breed you like and are sure you can HANDLE, and get a BREED book about it. Different breeds often need different handling. Any Dog Should be TRAINED at least to Basic Levels!

Female Dobermans or Rotwielers are two of the best guard dogs. They live to protect you!!! They dont know the difference between a friend or an enemy so they'll be quick to attack. Also, guard dogs bark A LOT and really loudly.I wouldn't recomend buying a grown dog in either breeds because you dont have control over what they've already been trained. Start from puppy years and train them well in obedience and barking. The obedience training will help you to make them sit while you let in company. I recomend going to a professional training program.

I dont really think it depends on the breed - my dog is a cocker spaniel dauschand mix & he's a great gaurd dog. His bark is worse then his bite. Usually any dog that you & your family bond with will make a wonderful gaurd dog. But if you want something to look fierce try a rotti or a pit - take extreme caution though . You have to take care of them & if your going to actually train them to be mean that probably isnt good considering these dogs have a bad repuation as it is. But dobermans are good too... whatever suits your personality & life style.

Any one. My little ratweiller (tiny teeny yorkie) goes ballistic if anyone goes near 'her' car. My other little dogs are also good guard dogs. My giant schnauzer was also great, the collie cross was downright dangerous and would bite without warning. You don't need a dog which bites, you just need one which makes a noise and which *looks* like it will bite.
Any breed will guard and protect it's home and family, you don't need a specific breed for that.

Bull mastiffs, German Shepherds, Dobermans, Rotweillers.
But it has to be trained as either a guard dog or just a family pet not both.

Guard dogs are those used as security for businesses, land etc. I would say dogs like Alsations, Rockweilers etc. BUT if you are refering to a protective pet again i would recommend German shepherd or boxers(having two myself) they are the softest big babies to live with but let anyone they dont like cross your doorway or make you feel threatened and they instantly know!and they will protect you with their life!

German Shepherds, Collies and Dobbverman Pinchers. Remember: All breeds are subject to turn "because it's bred in them". Out of these, the least likely would be the Collie. They're easy to train most of the time. From everything I've read and seen on tv. regarding pit bulls, I'd stay away from them.
