-I have 3 siblings, 11 months old, 6 years old, 10 year old, and me (12 year old)
-Someone will be in the house only 4 times a week, but we have a fence, a good sized lawn and our neighbour also has a dog for it to socialize with while I am at school (8:00am - 4:00pm + 4 times a week I will go to taekwondo (40 minutes))
-We have a pretty large basement with hardly any furniture (just a tv, couch and an old desk + chaire)
-The dog can't look like a rat... my dad hates chihuaha like dogs and the ones with scrunched up faces
-The dog has to be pretty quiet because of my sisters naps... not mute, just not very disruptive
-The dog can't be very big or shed ALOT because it's not like we have maids and stuff
-The dog has to be able to be brought around. We are moving to sri lanka in about a year and a half and it cant be one that gets sick
Please help? Sorrry about all the restrictions, but this is why I need your help.

Take this quiz, and it will give you your top ranking dog compatibilities. It might take a while, but in the end, it really works well, it's not just some stupid quiz:
http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselector.do
I actually tried taking the quiz based on what you said, and these are the top 10 dogs:
Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Saluki
Whippet
Beagle
Belgian Tervuren
Brittany
Cardigan Welsh Corgi
Harrier
Sussex Spaniel
Welsh Springer Spaniel
but, I really think that you should take the quiz yourself, because I guessed on some of the questions.

I think you should go to your local Humane Society or SPCA. I have found that dogs who have been in shelters are housebroken if they say they are housebroken. They also have some disease resistance if they have been with all the other dogs in the shelter and they are not sick. Shelter workers can tell you more about the temperament of the dog, too, like if it gets along with children, if it barks a lot, etc. A dog who has been in the shelter will probably tolerate quarantine if they have one in Sri Lanka.
I had 12 over the last thirty years. I have some who like to bark as a pastime ,one was destructive and killed other animals . The dogs from the Humane Society
are exactly what I was told they were. They were the only "known quantities". Getting a dog that is not a little pup < which has to be housebroken, will teeth, etc> makes it more fun to get a dog. Our Humane Society has lots of information to help your family get off to a great start with a dog.
One thing to keep in mind: the last dog I got at the Humane Society was almost 2 y o. I thought he was full sized. He had been raised in an RV. He grew about 3-4 inches taller once he had room. It surprised me, but was not a problem for us!
You will also be saving the life of a deserving dog.

The pet owners should feed their dog or cat. This is one of their many responsibilities , it is often difficult to make up the mind about the best dog food for their pet. Knowing which ingredients to look for and which to avoid can make the choice much easier, Protein is the Most Important Ingredient, it should be the top ingredient in any dog food. But the kind of protein matters as much as the amount . I propose you to discover the 5 golden rules that you should always apply before you buy any pack of kibble. Even if your veterinary will recommend them, do not buy until you have passed the test of kibble 5 rules.

maybe you should waite .. you have a fenced yard are you wanting a out side dog ? than you would need to get one that could handle living outside in all weather types .. you do not want to keep a dog locked up in a base ment .. a small dog non shedding would be ok to gate in a luandry room or bath room or cage while your gone to school but than your moving .. maybe you should waite till things get calm or try a shelter or humane society go visit a puppy or animal a few times an see if the animal will fit to your home life.. not every one has time for a pet ...

Sorry but a dog that doesn't get sick????
NEVER All animals get sick just like people do and they often need a vet
QUIET?? AS IN NOT BARK AND WAKE THEM
Only one breed, the Basnji, doesn't bark but it yodels. Sorry, no such thing. Sooner or later, the dog will bark and wake them during the day.
Moving to Sir lanka??? DO NOT GET A DOG UNLESS YOU KNOW YOU CAN IMPORT IT INTO THAT COUNTRY
Go here and read about the breeds:
http://www.akc.org/breeds/index.cfm?nav_area=breeds
Click on the picture of the dog and then go to the leeft hand column and click on "National Breed CLub" for more information about that breed.

Our life is pretty busy too. We have bicson fise mutts. They don't shed and are very sweet. Plus they're tiny like tea cup poodle but they certainly aren't big. They're a good medium size.
I can also tell you that a great dane isn't the best dog to get with children so young. Danes (as a breed) are often threatened by something shorter than they are and can resort to violence.

sounds like you a very mature 12 yr. old, you sure have thought this out. I bet you can make a better choice than any of us out here can...and about your dad, and trust me (a kind of old lady), he would grow to like a small dog with a scrunched up face, thats all talk.
I would go to your local shelter, mutts most often have better personalities, less physical complications and a never ending appreciation for the rescuers, really. also, adult dogs are easier than puppies and have a lot to offer. i have had 3 shelter dogs and have loved them all to pieces, good luck, keep up your research!!!!!! sounds like you will be a great dog owner.

I love King Charles spaniels, if you go to a pet store or the pound ask to play with one and if they seem friendly (they usually are) it's a great dog to get. Great with children, medium size, don't look like ratsm :) , not very disruptive but like to be active so they would love to be outside, and besides a hair trim every now and then I'm pretty sure they ar every low matinence, good luck!
PS If you do get one a good name is Charlie, I knew the sweetest King Charles Spaniel named Charlie it might be good luck!

wow. that's a lot of restrictions....oy. I would say a golden retriever because they're good with families, but they can get pretty big depending on the type. ummm. In the sources, I put a site with a list of dog types, if that helps.
