The main difference between DVD and CD is technology to use store data on a disc. DVD stands for Digital Video Disc and it stores very huge data to built a picture on very fast speed. Hence to keep size of DVD as same. Special technology is being used to store data and read as well. Hence can store data very high compared to a normal CD. This also called a CD because it is also a compact disc.

A normal CD is a normal data application and having less memory storage space. Can be used to store different data such as audio, mp3 etc.

A DVD can hold data (music or video or any other form of data) of size about 4.7 GB whereas CDs can hold around 700 MB. In other terms a DVD is nearly 7 times larger in capacity than a CD though the size of the discs are same.
A DVD has a much compressed format which enables it to hold to such huge volumes of data.

well a DVD can hold a maximum of around 4.7GB (for a single layer DVD)... a double of dual layer DVD can hold upto 8.5-9GB data...
also a DVD is divided by the manufacturer into zones... which means that a DVD which belongs to a certain zone cannot function in another and cannot be simply be copied on a diff zone disc... helps curb piracy... the world is divided in aroung 7 to 8 diff zones...

and a CD on the other had can hold merely a max of 700MB data...
also a CD does not have a zone labelling system...

i buy DVDs of all zones.. it sounds expensive..
