It's really all about the carbonation. It makes ya burp and makes you feel better, getting rid of the gas in your stomach when you're sick. I think 7up and sprite have less sugar than others and no caffeine. Dark colas will work, but they're not good to drink when you're puking.

Good question!

A good rule of thumb is that if you are not puking, go with Coke. If you are puking, go with the clear stuff.

When Coke was first made, it was uncarbonated and sold as a stomach tonic, and it worked. When Coke was carbonated and sold as a soft drink, the ingredients that made Coke an effective stomach tonic were left in, so it's stomach-easing properties are still there.

It's not the cola stuff that's hard on a puking stomach, it's the caffeine. Stuff like Sprite and 7-Up are good for a sick stomach, but any soda without caffeine would do the same thing. Some people don't tolerate sugar well when their stomachs are rioting, so diet caffeine-free soda might be the way to go.
