They were created by the king for his wife, much like the Taj Mahal was. They involved an intricate and sophisticated system or irrigation and hydraulics, therefore, they were a great scientific achievement. They represented a theological worldview in which heaven was visualized as a garden in the desert. They were a powerful political tool to provide a kind of "shock and awe" to all who came to Babylon, that is, they were an expression of political power and might. They were a testimony to the creative genius of humankind.

In Babylon. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon constituted one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. King Nebuchadnezzar built them to please his wife, a Median princess, who had come from a hilly country and, upset at the flatness of Babylonia, sighed for her native mountains. It is said that Nebuchadnezzar built arches progressively higher, like steps, and overlaid this mountain of masonry with sufficient soil to nourish the largest trees. At the top he built a reservoir, supplied from the Euphrates by a screw-type water lift. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon have been hailed as one of the wonders of the ancient world. They were built by King Nebuchadnezzar more than 2,500 years ago for his Median wife who yearned for the forests and hills of her homeland. This 75-foot-high [22 - meter] stepped structure of arched vaults, all richly planted, contained enough soil to nurture large trees. The homesick queen was likely comforted as she strolled through this terraced Eden-like area.
