So, I'm new to Houston and never lived in this region before. Having lived mostly on East Coast/West Coast cities, its quite scary to come across men wearing cowboy hats (even the cops wear them around here!). I want to put my ignorance and prejudice aside. What can you tell me about guys who wear cowboy hats? I'm a young professional scoping out the dating scene as well. Thanks!

Wow! I'm loving all of your answers. Keep them coming. I'd never heard of "drugstore or concrete cowboys" before. I'm a friendly straightshooter myself... oh, and for the person who asked, I'm a mixed latina WOMAN!! (not going in the Brokeback Mountain direction)

Speaking as one who has actually ridden a horse and branded, vaccinated and castrated cattle (as a young man in the Dakotas), Houston is not necessarily "cowboy" country. Most of the guys who wear cowboy hats are "concrete" cowboys, "drugstore" cowboys, or "midnight" cowboys whose boots have never seen a drop of cowshite. There are very very few "real" cowboys in Houston. Mostly they are wannabe posers who talk funny and work at crappy jobs to make the payment on their huge tricked out pickup truck. Most would not know which way the saddle goes on a horse. There are good guys in the mix and some turds like most groups of guys. Now, if you get out into the country, that is a different matter. There are real cowboys out there and they are ignorant (and proud of it) and prejudiced (and are proud of it) - they also talk funny (and are proud of it) - at least there is some cow poop on their boots. The vast majority of dateable (and ones with better paying jobs) men in Houston do not wear cowboy hats. You've just got to stop hanging out in kicker (as in sh1tkicker) bars.
SInce you are part Latina - be aware of "true" vaqueros - good guys and tough guys. the real deal. Toughest hands I ever met - good with horses (at least the ones from Jalisco). Don't know so much about city "home" boys. Hey, you wanna meet a cute Anglo guy headed for the Marine Corps? (My son)....LOL ;-) Any way Good Luck to you I hope you find a good man.....

Well all I can tell you is that you are in Texas and that should tell you enough. And guys that wear cowboy hats, depends on how they act. Because if they are real men, they will tip their hat to a lady. And I don't care what part of the country a person comes from, a lady will always smile at that compliment. Because more men around the country, could do with some Texas manners. What is there to be afraid of? A man is a man no matter what he wears on his head. But you got a couple different things going on there. #1 your in Houston, Texas. #2 A guy that wears a cowboy hat can be a real man just as I described, or a jerk wearing a cowboy hat trying to act like something he isn't. So no matter if it is a culture shock for you, you will be able to arrive at your own conclusion after being there for awhile. Smile. Good Luck.

I'm glad to hear your willingness to educate yourself. Men in cowboy hats can either be full fledged, calf ropin', spur wearin' cowboys on the ranch. Or they can be just average joes that enjoy country music more and would rather be somewhere you cannot see the city.Your typical cowboy is a straight shooter, they rarely play games that urbanite GQ boys do. If they want you or they want something they will just say it, and they do not give a damn what anyone else thinks. They are more concerned about what feels right and what they want to do than what is popular or what they are supposed to do.
If you are an honest and good person on the inside, a cowboy will appreciate it a lot faster than most. He likes pretty girls as much as the next guy, but he will always take care of a woman that is willing to take care of him.
You will get past the hat in no time, and once you do I think you will like what you find. They can sense someone who is being themself and not trying to be something they are not.

I love cowboys but that's because I'm a simple country girl myself, and there aren't many of them now that I've moved out to MA, but then I guess it's a good thing I married myself one. I was always the cowgirl wearing the boots and the hat that the GUYS drooled over. But them cowboys are pretty sweet! The real ones are. The guys that don the hat and boots but have the baby soft hands and the sickly pale skin, they aint the real thing, and it's extremely unattractive. But a man with a good, strong touch, and a lean, hard muscles, with a real nice tan from hard labor, they just radiate manliness.

This is the west...
Maybe mostly drugstore cowboys but the fashion remains...
Get used to cowboy hats & boots & belt buckles...
Not all the guys wear cowboy hats...
