I have a computer running Windows 98SE and I want to install Windows 2000 Pro on it. I can not remember who backward compabile 2000 Pro is. If I backed up my text files and jpegs files they would still run in the 200, right? And if I have picture viewers to clean up and resize jpegs etc. Those that ran under 98SE would they still most likely work under 2000 Pro? How much change can I expect? Is it like tearing the house all the way down to the floor boards or more of a cabinet reface, carpet, and paint?

Suggest you back up ALL files you want to keep EXTERNALLY and then RELOAD them AFTER the change. (Your HD will be re-formated when you load 2000.)

98 uses FAT32, 2000 SHOULD be installed as NTFS or the security is not available, but it CAN read the FAT32 files. (they would have to be on a separate partition, formatted for FAT32.)

Programs may or may not be compatible, BUT there may be versions for 2000 available from the manufacturer as updates or upgrades.

2000, if I remember correctly, does NOT have the capability of XP to run in other modes.

Try starting from the foundation and rebuilding with a different material!!

its really not that bad. although windows 2000 isnt really any better than windows 98se except more things are compatible with it.your jpegs should be fine as well as your text files....your best bet would be XP

2000 is a much better OS.

I think your question refers to an upgrade rather then wiping the HD clean. (right?) I would suggest you burn any files you want to keep on a CD (or two) and wiping the HD if for no other reason than to dump FAT32 for NTFS.

My advice... reformat your HD and start clean.

Yes, I would say everything you backed up should run on the newer version. I mean, they're UPDATING it to make it compatible with more things, not less, so I don't see why not. Also, just a suggestion here, you should get Windows XP (SP2).

text files and jpegs are data files. They will not be impacted by upgrading to Win2000. What is impacted are your programs that were running in Win98SE to use those text files and jpegs. They may or may not be able to run on Win2000.
