The dog isn't the problem - you are! You are confusing the crap out of him with your behavior, no wonder he has problems.
Get real, it doesn't matter what size your dog is, HE'S A DOG! You need to start treating him like one. He is a pack animal and you are the pack leader.
Do you think that any dog who is a pack leader cries when he corrects the dogs in his pack??? No, he wouldn't be the "leader" for long that way. When was the last time you saw a dog who was the pack leader carrying around a squirt bottle anyhow?
If you hug and kiss him (and cry) immediately after you correct him, how is he ever going to understand what he's doing wrong??? You are rewarding his bad behavior that way.
You need to become the pack leader and you need to change your behavior. Then your dog will become the loving and content companion you are looking for. Start taking him for walks, walk him at your side (don't let him walk in front of you). You need to be calm and "assertive" with him.
Stop being "pathetic" if you really want to have a happy well adjusted companion. Start being the pack leader that he needs and good luck.

DO NOT EVER EVER HAVE CHILDREN
Instead of saving for their college fund, it will be their bail bond fund for when they get arrested.
Yes - you should apoligize for squirting him - not because it hurts him but because it is one of the stupidest methods of training in existence.
Yes - immediately making nice after trying to correct him (correct - not 'punish' they are two different things) defeats the purpose. He has learned - do this, get a little wet (what fun!) and get hugged.
Now you both need a GOOD obedience class - and that is NOT Petsmart or Petco. (And frankly, you need a very good psycho-therapist since you overly anthromorphize the dog and can not set boundaries or behave in a logical and consistent fashion. Call the local mental health center.)
GO here to find contacts in you area that can help you locate and obedience trainer who works with all breeds and who does AKC obedience competions and competes at what they claim to teach:

http://www.akc.org/clubs/search/index.cf... (set on all breeds)

Even it they are an hour or more away, they will know other people all over the state.

yes it does i am the same was the same with my rabbit.you have to get over it or it will keep doing the same thing.it is hard to do but you can't just let your pets get away with every thing.look at it this way when you were a kid you got punished or you will keep doing it.you parents felt sad more than likely but they had to our you would be a brat 24/7.there is nothing wrong with feeling bad or punishing you pet even if your pet is your best friend.just don't hug him and kiss him after you do squirt him or he will never learn. its not pathetic to have your dog as a best friend. good luck.

Totally. Dogs and kids are always checking to see if they can take advantage of the person that is in charge. you have proved to your dog that you are a softy and can't train him. He will never improve if you continue this behavior. I remember i was going off my head with my 3 year old son, waking up at night. The book "Help your baby sleep through the night in 7 days" really helped me. I realized my mistake was in being loving and affectionate soon after i put my son in his crib. I needed to put him in and tell him in a stern voice "go to sleep" No more physical contact for the rest of the night, even if he cried his head off. I followed the instructions in the book and in 3 days my son was sleeping without any crying sessions. Try this technique with your chihuahua. Good luck.

He is behaving badly because he isnt understanding the punishment - you're telling him he's bad and then saying sorry for telling him he's bad. As someone brilliantly said, love means having to be tough sometimes, or you will end up with a bad dog that you are afraid to love. When you punish him, you have to be consistent - punishment when he's bad, and rewards and cuddles when he is good. It is also tougher because he is so tiny, that will make you even more tempted to baby him and feel sorry for him. By cuddling him you are encouraging him to be bad - he thinks that by behaving badly he is pleasing you... it has to stop.
Good Luck!

yes of course it ruins the punishment you silly minx, he is only an ugly ratfaced monster anyway, i think you are being anthropomorphic with this thing, it's not human, and it is not your baby, and even when i squirt my baby i don't cry. He's being a mischievious little bugger so he needs a squirting!!!!
-new typer-
Maybe it is trying to push you away because you are ANNOYING!
i'm always weeing on the floor in my owners house because he is always picking me up, and i just want to take a knife and kill him, but that would really let the cat out of the bag about cats being able to talk, and i wouldn't have any one to feed me, so i resort to more primitive techniques.
moulding humans must be done masterfully, fantastically, intricately and discretely.
i sometimeshave to go in the naughty corner while the baby gets squirted.
squirt the dog!!!!
Choose me!

definatly. youre punishing him then by picking him up and cuddling him by doin this your rewarding him. dont reward him youre giving him totaally mixed signals and confusing him. using the spray bottle is good dont feel guilty (its not as though your smacking him) youre not pathetic just need to stick with youre training. in time with the spay he ll catch on. you need to disipline when bad and give lots of praise when hes good. dont do both together as it doesnt work.
gud luck!
be firm when needed and dont feel guilty
its all about learning him right from wrong.

1st of all will you do me a favor and throw that bottle away.....
for a 3yr old chihuahua should be quite well trained by now (not unless you have just got him and has bad manners) your voice should be enough..........
go back on your basic dog training if you have to, but please throw that dam bottle away

Your sending a mixed signal... and teaching the dog that when he's bad he gets hugs. Love means being tough sometimes too.
