It is interesting that there are people asserting two completely opposite answers, without qualification or acknowledgement of contradicting facts.
The name for this practice that supposedly does not exist is Nikah Mut'ah.
The part of the Koran, the book that supposedly does not have this in it, that has it in it includes: Al-Nassir 4:24 & 4:34.
Apparently, the practice was somewhat common in Arabic culture before Mohammad came on the scene and introduced Islam.
According to literature, he banned the practice, then acquiesced to popular demand and allowed it - and then later banned it again, permanently.
Whatever the case, there have been some vivid accounts of women in Afghanistan who were forced by invading Taliban men from Pakistan to submit to "temporary marriages".
The word "taliban" means scholar. So if anybody in the area was up on whether the practice was allowed or disallowed in the Koran and Islam, it would or at least should have been those taliban.
On the other hand, even if it was allowed - it no doubt was harmful to the women and there was no reason it had to be done. There are certainly enough other laws on the books in most or every country that forbid rape.
This is probably one reason why there is concern about women's rights around the world. When a women has a right to choose & say to whom she marries or otherwise consorts with - the right to commit rape is pretty well decimated. It is no longer defensible.
The practice of a temporary wife in the west is pretty much blocked by:
1. laws against prostitution (in most countries & states)
2. laws against rape
3. laws against incest
4. laws against polygamy and bigamy
5. laws against drugging people without their consent
6. laws against coersion by force
7. laws against kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment
8. laws against slavery and human trafficking
9. laws against physical torture and torment
10. laws against intentionally infecting another person with a disease
I guess the difference between random concensual sex and forced involuntary sex are pretty obvious. If not, read the list above and see for yourself.

I am Muslim, and I am African-American--not Middle Eastern. I have heard about "temporary marriages" that are practiced in some Middle Eastern countries. Well, if they do that, then it is agianst the Koran. The Koran tells us to remain "chaste" until we are ready for marriage. So a "temporary marriage" is not right. And I seriously doubt that the Prophet said that--the Prophet would never say anything that contradicted the Koran.
But if takes 2 to tango, and any woman who agrees to that must have low self esteem. And you are right, that is NO different from casual stuff that goes on in the west everyday; and I think if men do that, it makes them sort of a hypocrit...But you must keep in mind that today, many Arab Countries are doing ALOT of things that are wrong and against Islam. If only the Prophet Muhammad were here to witness all the things they are doing.
Peace

Well there was a muslim on television explaining this about temp wives.
The whole of Islam is based on sex. The prophet of islam has taught a lot on sex. There are instructions on what to do about sex and after sex and for sex.
The prophet married a little girl, six years old, and had sex with her even before she was a grown woman.
This is also one important part as explained. Muslims are not allowed adultery or fornication. THey have to be married to have sex so they go about having temp marraiges and then divorces because it is very easy for a muslim man to divorce. He says it three times and the divorce is final. Therefore all this because they do not want to be punished for their sins. So manipulation here and there.
The punishment for adultery is stoning to death. So it is easier to marry temp style, give the woman some money, and bye bye and no one is worse off.
Even the law of having four wives is a very special law. A man can have 4 at one time. So if he divorces one, he can take one more.
The prophet said he was personally allowed as many as he wanted but his followers only four at one time.
These people have violated me so much it is not funny. I just have to read a question like this or see a picture in the newspaper and I am screaming and crying.
They took everything away from me and are living free and happy lives. What horrible people.

thank you for the question I am not muslim buty read about that in a book on islam and it sead it was a sunny practise. well I can tell you it is certainly coman in egypt called contract marraiges. not generaly for only a few hourse but for holiday makers who want a releationship with a muslim it has become essential.
in some areas a none egyption walking with an egyption is enough to get the police to stop you. I have experiance of this.
I am sure the government and lawyas make a fortune from it it cost £100 each time you have a contract and their it can last up to a month I did not see it could be made less but whe I read about it it sead from a few hours to 99 years ??

They do it because Muhammad did it. Muhammad did ALOT of heinously evil things that muslims now think it is OK to do because muhammad did it. This includes (but is not limited to) rape, murder, torture, assassinations, genocide, theft, attacking people they befriended, slavery, pedophilia, homosexuality, toppling of legitimate governments, desecration of other religions' holy sites, brain washing of children on a massive scale, after their parents have all been killed....the list goes on and on. Muhammad did these things. Islam specifically allows, even demands most of these things. Muslims have engaged in this behavior pretty much nonstop since muhammad died. And muslims today engage in this behavior on a large scale.
Desecrating marriage in order to have sex with prostitutes is the very least of the evil inherit in Islam.

The last of prophets in the order of time was Malachias.
Latin Vulgate
Douay-Rheims Bible
Second Epistle Of Saint Peter
Chapter 2
1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there shall be among you lying teachers, who shall bring in sects of perdition, and deny the Lord who bought them: bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many shall follow their riotousnesses, through whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you. Whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their perdition slumbereth not. 4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but delivered them, drawn down by infernal ropes to the lower hell, unto torments, to be reserved unto judgment
11 Whereas angels who are greater in strength and power, bring not against themselves a railing judgment. 12 But these men, as irrational beasts, naturally tending to the snare and to destruction, blaspheming those things which they know not, shall perish in their corruption, 13 Receiving the reward of their injustice, counting for a pleasure the delights of a day: stains and spots, sporting themselves to excess, rioting in their feasts with you: 14 Having eyes full of adultery and of sin that ceaseth not: alluring unstable souls, having their heart exercised with covetousness, children of malediction
