Depends on what type of venue you have. An outside wedding can be absolutely stunning. Weaving small clear lights into the shrubbery and it is also cost effective. I would go for that since it sounds like a second marriage and much of the elaborate details are unecessary. This should be an opportunity for the bride and groom to enjoy themselves with family and friends and exchange their vows. It can thus be a more casual and relaxed atmosphere.

Try looking at Renewed Dreams - http://reneweddreams.501megs.com
Under Pre-wedding Articles there is advice about locating the perfect location, selecting a time of day, and more.
The main question is what time of the year are they wanting to get married. If you do a little research on the Internet you should be able to find the past weather information for your area. This will tell you what the temp is usually like, if it has rained or been windy, ect.
Outdoor weddings turn out the best if the Bride and Groom are having a small wedding. These are also nice if children are invited since there is plenty of room to run around before and after the ceremony.
Indoor weddings can be more expensive but decorating is a snap and most people feel more comfortable dressing up.
Also see if they want to have the reception right after the ceremony. If they do, you will need to find a setting that will accommodate both.
Congrats to your dad!

Where do you live? I live in Wyoming we have 330 days of sun a year. Outdoor weddings are not a problem. I used to live Pennsylvania, almost impossible to plan an outdoor wedding there; you never know what day it's going to rain. You can plan an outdoor wedding but you have to have a backup plan in case the weather is bad. All in all an indoor wedding is probably for the best. I hate walking in grass in heels, it ruins the shoes.

Depending on the season, you might want to keep things inside. Outdoor wedding ceremonies are great, but can be very costly with tents, etc...inside wedding ceremonies are great because they don't require extra preparation for bad weather.

There are too many variables when it comes to a outdoor wedding. It never seems like a viable plan to me. There are always problems for any outdoor weddings I have attended.
I say rent a local VFW or K of C hall and have the wedding and reception in the hall.

An outside wedding is soooo much cooler! BUT have an emergency plan in case of rain! Never seems to go off without a hitch!

This is probably my own bias, but I would never have an outdoor wedding. Aside from the weather (it could rain, be cold, hot, windy, etc.), you have to consider insects and plants that can trigger alergies in your wedding party and guests.
