this is how this teacher at my school said it: he said put a sock on the wall and push your scroll on it. then put one of your fingers down and wave your hand.
i think his way is wierd and it sounds funny that. was a middle school teacher and he taught computer science and played the violin. i've seen people in my class do it, and i think it works the best when you have a shoulder rest so you instrument wont move with your fingers. it should also be done a one speed. dont speed it up or slow down when you're doing it. i've tried it, but i dont like it because it sounds like a buzzing fly. if your parents wont buy you a shoulder rest, a sponge and a rubber band kiind of works.

(1) Imitating video: Have you watched video closeups of good violinists? If you start by imitating the motions of another violinist you can relate to, maybe you can develop your style from there. Ask your teacher, or videotape a violin soloist from any performance off public broadcast TV that shows closeups. (2) Playing with another experienced violinist: Or is there a way you could sit with other violinists or cellists with an ensemble, music school, or church orchestra who will show you how they do it? If you both play through the same music together at the same time, maybe you can compare how much vibrato you are using. (3) Overdoing it, then backing off: If you are shy or feel awkward about trying a new technique, I suggest you practice overdoing in an "exaggerated" way until you get over feeling ridiculous. Then when you get used to doing it that way, you can tone it down and make it more subtle and musical, which will seem natural in comparison. I used this technique in acting when rehearsing difficult lines or accents to make them flow more naturally.
