I was wondering that when you try to trade in your car and they check the mileage, do they look at the odometer or try something else. B/c if it is only the odometer then you could just turn it back to a reasonable mileage and they would never know, right? I mean, some people turn their's back all the time. If they don't go by the odometer then what do they use?

Okay. So now, say for instance, you have 94k miles on your car. Does it make any difference in those miles being highway or city miles?

Turning back an odometer is a felony, and when the car goes to auction they do check. So you will with almost certainty get caught. If your car is cheap, then they may not care, but if you are try to build value in the thousands that is not there they will call the state attorneys office. These vehicles have their title branded TMU they are worth as much as a Salvage title, because they could have 300,000 miles on them. Accept the mileage your car has because you would not want a dealer doing that to you...

Odometers on most cars now will not turn back. When you try to then white shows around the numbers dragged there by the backward turn. It is pretty obvious. Also the new electronic odometers have no way of being turned back anyway.

In this state you also have to sign on the title saying that the mileage shown is correct. If it is not correct you have to say what the true mileage is.

So I don't think that nowadays "some people turn their's back all the time."

You can tell by the general wear of the vehicle if someone is trying to "cheat" and turn the odometer back. Plus, if you do get caught, it's illegeal to try to fool someone this way.

You can do it only on some older vehicles, but it's illegal, and if you do it usually the DMV keeps a record of how many miles the car had when you bought it and if they suspect there's something funny they'll open an investigation and you could end up in jail.

Go ahead....you will have about three years wearing an orange jumpsuit to think about what a great deal you got on trade-in.
Idiot. This is a FEDERAL crime and all but impossible to do on any vehicle newer than a 1990 model.

Yes, but this is illegal. You cannot do this with the electronic odometers they have on the newer cars.

It's against the law, and you can end up paying a huge fine or spending time in jail.
