Silica Gel is basically moisture super-absorbing sand. This helps prevent moisture damage to a wide range of products including: electronics, some foods, some boxed furniture, even sheet steel when shipped.

It does get fully saturated but can be re-used if "baked" dry. There is also silica that comes in colours to show the effectiveness left(turns blue as the percentage of water goes up).

Silica gel is an amorphous form of silicon dioxide, producing in the form of hard irregular beads with having high surface area about (800 square meters per gram) because of its a micro porous structure of interlocking cavities that makes silica gel a high capacity of moisture absorb desiccant.

To draw moisture so what ever you put it with wont be harmed by corrosion or moisture damage.
