I use VLC Media Player. It plays almost every format and it is free.

You should be able to watch .avi clips using windows media player.. if it does not play them, it means that you have not got the supporting codecs.. you can try using VLC player.. download the same from...

It has got nearly all codecs inbuilt and it is FREE!
