So, this has happened to me several times in the last month or two and I don't know what to say in return. "Thanks" is just awkward. I've also tried playing it off, but that's also semi-awkward. Any thoughts?
And also what's the motive behind a girl who says that? Does she still have a crush? Or is she totally over you?

I think girls say that cause they maybe secretly still like you and are just to scared to tell you the truth and want you to like purse them or they wish you had pursed them before but now they have someone it could be one or the other or both I have said that before!!!

Generally, the desired response is something to the tune of, "No way! I had a crush on YOU!" However, this is not always the case (it doesn't seem to be here), so the alternative answer would sound something like, "Really? Oh my god, I never knew!" which expresses the enthusiasm without a positive or negative slant to it.
Generally, when a girl tells you she used to have a crush on you, she is trying to let you know that she did and still does find you attractive, while buffering it with an "isn't that silly?" element in an attempt to see how you will react. If your reaction is positive, then the two of you move on to "catching up" and eventually dating, and if it isn't, then she seemingly comes away from the situation without having suffered any type of rejection.

Your answer depends on weather or not you also had feelings. She may be trying to start something, or maybe she is just open with her feelings... more so that she was back then... So what do you do?.. Ask yourself, what do you want to happen and act upon that as required... taking into consideration if either of you are married! But if you want it to stop there.. say what I say... "You and half the cheerleading squad"
