is there a law to say how close a sign about parking restrictions must be to the bit of road that it governs?

Each state is different, but usually restrictions occur between two signs, or in a colored zone area such as a curb painted white zone for loading and unloading only.

Below is a link to a traffic ticket fighting web site. It makes for some interesting reading. I have used some of the tips from this site successfully. Such as fighting the ticket and changing the court date. The cop usually has a regular court day and when you change that day, the cop has to change his routine to accommodate your ticket. You have a good chance the cop won't show up and you get off free and clear when the cop doesn't show up for court.

Pay the fine and move on. You'll not "win" this issue since the police officer who issued the ticket knows a lot more about municipal parking restrictions than you'll ever know by trolling Google!

Pay the ticket and get on with your life. Each state is different just as each city is different in thier rules and regulations pertaining to Standard Traffic Ordinances (STO). Look up or try to get a copy of the STO book from your area and you will find out.

Go to your internet search engine and try putting in key words, followed by your state to try and find this information.
Example: NY, parking violation, parking restrictions to street signs.

You should find the info you need if you keep trying. Try the combination of words, then try them as separate ones, like the first before my comma, then the second one.
