Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

computers can run slow for a variety of reasons ,some good ,some not
the first reason for a p.c running slow is lack of system memory,windows xp requires at least 64mb of ram to function correctly (source:microsoft.com),but this is not advised,i would recommend at least 512mb ram to make sure of a smooth running system,you have to remember anti-virus can take a big chunk of memory and this can be as much as 128mb
go to crucial.com(http://www.crucial.com/)and scan your system for the correct memory module and shop about for bargain memory,tip: kingston value memory is much cheaper than others but just as good,i use it
secondly spyware and viruses can dramatically reduce your systems speed,check for viruses and spyware using your systems security software
lastly system junk(temp files and folders,unused folders,ect)can slow down your p.c to a crawl and is quite easy to avoid this.
go to ccleaner(http://www.ccleaner.com/)and download the latest version of ccleaner,this program will run a sweep for all these type of junk,but will clean it within one package,it will clean the registry aswell,one of the main culprits for system errors
do all of this and i am sure you will see a marked improvement in your p.c,s performance
i hope this will sort out your p.c,s spped problem
good luck

if you havent already done it, run defrag. start>accessories>system tools>disk defragmenter
usually the first thing to try, although it can take a while.
also check you dont have loads of background tasks running.
startups can be the worst if they are full of junk. delete anything non-essential from the startup folder in the start menu.
then if you still have loads of guff starting up at startup do
start>run and type "msconfig"
dont mess about with anything outside the "startup" tab, tho!

secure mode ought to consistently be slower. the reason being once you boot into secure mode in easy terms mandatory drivers are loaded. and that they are time-honored drivers at that. without the drivers that optimize speed for pc aspects that's going to run sluggish.

There isn't any, you just have to do regular housekeeping on you pc as part of a routine!
- Uninstall any programs you don't use regularly, especially if you have them backed up on disc.
- Burn any old files to cd or an external hard drive and delete them.
- Run Ccleaner, using both the Cleaner and the Issues buttons; back up the registry when prompted.
- Defragment the hard drive from Start - programs - accessories - system tools - disc defragmenter, let the pc run. In future do this once a month.
- Update your firewall, anti virus and anti spyware and run them.
- Install more RAM. If you're running XP, have a gig or more.
Before attempting to remove malware you must switch off System Restore as back up files will be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.
Then beef up your security. Its easier to prevent malware getting on to your sytem in the first place rather than trying to remove it.
You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out. Both these firewalls are free for personal use and stop unwanted incoming and outgoing traffic.

Instal both these web browsers, turn off javascript on one and use that browser for vising unknown websites. They don't support Active X so thats one less way for problems to get on your pc.
You need to install one anti virus;

http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus
You need all three anti spyware programs;

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.
