"If a man shall smite you on the cheek, then offer him the other". I think not. I'm more likely evade or block the attack, if possible and then either run or fight back. What altruistic benefit is there to be derived form allowing another to abuse me? Perhaps theres more implied in this verse than seems immedietly obvious. I could turn my body 180 degrees offering the other cheek followed by a back kick or some other technichue before he actually gets a chance to hit it. The bible doesn't actually say this. Then again it doesn't say not to.

What it means is to forgive, and not look for ways for revenge.

Jesus also said:" Love your enemy not just your friends." basically he was teaching other to love one another, to forgive those who wrong you, and not to look for revenge.

Jesus Christ main massage was to teach us how to love one another, and to try to find the best in other people, and if they wrong you, try to forgive them and not look for ways to get them back. HE didn't want us to just sit there and let others use us as a punishing bag, but to look for a ways to solve our problems not add to it. What happen when you turn around 180 degree and kick or punish the light out of that person? in return, they too would want to get up and do the same to you, and on and on. This is what is going on in this world today. Instead of turning the other cheek! we close our fist, and punish whoever happen to be in the way, and the cycle keeps going on. Tit for tat. never ending mess for all.

If you believe in God! how do you expect God all mighty to forgive your sins, if you are not willing to forgive the sins of your fellow man!?

The Bible actually does say that. Peace to YOU ALL.

This means to Avoid Conflict any way you can, run if you have to, but if they run after you to attack you------DEFEND yourself.
After all, you gave THEM a Chance to Walk Away, you Turned the Other Cheek.
Also, a slap on the Cheek is different from being Physically Attacked.
Defend yourself.

I think you pose an interesting point, but when Gandhi ji headed India, he practiced something similar to this as did his followers. It worked well enough to drive the British out of India and make his country free without killing a single Englishman. If your outlook is such that you are unwilling to accept any sacrifice, then you are correct, but if you stand by the principles of peace, then Gandhi ji was correct. Too bad he was murdered in 1947.

I agree completely. That's part of the reactionary message of the church. The ultimate idea is let the powerful control and dominate you. It's really a terrible message that I'm not about to follow.

In religion, the main goal is to transform or rectify the mind in a pure way.

Fighting back would create anger in the mind.

Running would create fear in the mind.

They can slap my left cheek, the right cheek, or both cheeks. They can turn my cheeks into a set of Bongos and I'll let them.

Christ was no "chump"....but He knew how to fight the spiritual battle instead of the physical battle....To the world He appeared weak and like a doormat....but those with spiritual understanding know He was triumphant.....and we are called to follow in His steps....
