We are going on a cruise around Italy and Croatia next August, starting from Rome. We fancy spending a couple of days in Rome beforehand for sightseeing. Can anyone recommend a reasonable place to stop?

Yes, I'm sure that someone can recommend a hotel in Rome.

Oh, you want a recommendation? OK.

First, be aware that the cruise does not depart from Rome. The port is about 2 hours North of Rome in Civitavecchia.

Next, make sure that you have a plan for what you want to do in Rome. 2 days is not long enough to see even a tenth of the sites, but you can get some of the major ones done.

Third, check with your cruise lines for special deals with Rome hotels. They can often negotiate great deals with hotels at embarkation and termination points.

Fourth, I've stayed at the Westin Excelsior and found it fabulous. It's a little out of the way, but you have subway lines near you if you need it and you are certainly within walking distance of ALL the major sites (including most of the Angels & Demons sites) except the vatican.

Finally, be wary of hotels near the colosseum, central train station, and the older sity center. These are often more run-down hotels and the areas can be slightly dangerous after dark. Staying near the Trevi fountain and Spanish Steps can be a fabulous option.

Good luck on your hotel search and have fun!

I suggest you Eurostars International Palace hotel -via Nazionale no.46. It's a very well located one, very close to the mains beauties of Rome. But: 1.Ask from the beginning for a large room and 2."a couple" means two days and they will be not enough to see "the must see", so....it's up to you.

Can't recommend one. However, the following websites http://www.hotels.com/ http://www.hotelclub.com/ http://uk.hoteldiscount.com/hoteldiscount/uk/index.html are brokers and agents which may be of help. The Smooth Hound System http://www.smoothhound.co.uk/ has recently started to list overseas hotels in its directory.

i appreciate inn Modigliani. i'm not particular if that that they had have something accessible on your budget because it really is so on the brink of your commute dates, yet they are correct by technique of the Spanish Steps, Trevi fountain, and a metro stop so that you'll genuinely get correct of entry to different parts of the city.
