Well, it is after the fact. Usually, if you want to securely delete files you use a privacy tool which deletes the files with multiple passes. However, in your case, you have already deleted the files and now you want to make sure they can't be retrieved. Well, at this point, you should defrag your hard drive. The disk defragmenter will move files on the hard drive closer together. But, by doing so, empty spaces on the hard drive is overwritten. This will make it much harder to retrieve the deleted file. Think of it as a VHS tape for a VCR. How do you erase something record on it? Easy, you record something over it. Same thing with the disk defragementer. Go to Start menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter > [Defragment]. If you want to be extra cautious, defrag your hard drive once every week and it will make it almost impossible to retrieve any deleted files.

In the future, use a privacy tool like CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com) or IE Privacy Keeper (www.browsertools.net/IEPK/downloads.shtml). They are both free.
