It's a tragedy, what happened to the Native Americans. What's almost as sad is that those do-gooder Missionaries probably thought that they were doing the right thing by "civilizing" the "savages" when really, all they were doing was systemically crushing innumerable rich cultures.
It isn't quite fair to peg it all on missionaries though. A big part of it goes to the government as well.

And the sad thing is that missionaries have not learned from their past mistakes, as they are still destroying indigenous cultures all over the world. I have personally seen this in Papua New Guinea.

Grr... I hate it when people use the good news of Jesus Christ to oppress others like that. It gives the good missionaries a bad name. The Gospel should be used to truly liberate people, not for personal gain. Why would people turn to Jesus when people force the Gospel on them like that? Why do people use the Gospel for personal gain? It makes me mad!
There are many good missionaries in the world who feed and clothe the poor people, so don't get me wrong. I love good missionaries. But there are some out there who are wolves in sheeps clothing. Grr.

It's a poignant expression of how much harm "missionary" work does. It's the destruction of a culture, and I think it's shameful.
