It is standard operating procedure not to allow black cats to be adopted during this season at my shelter and a number of other reputable shelters.... its wise because people are sickos. But I love cats so much and apparently
the fat of a black cat is used in European folk magic and things of that sort. Utter nonsense but then, people have a habit of believing utter nonsense, just ask an ultra-Catholic :)
Facetiousness aside, I have a cat (not black) who is not allowed outside of the house on Halloween. It is for her protection. and anyone who loves cats ought to do the same...apparently black cats don't get adopted as often as the other colors but really...I'm for it. seems the sensible thing to do for the cats.

While I agree that people who sacrifice animals are nothing but animals themselves, I also think that there is not a whole lot that can be done about it. If a person really wanted to sacrice an animal during Halloween, what is going to prevent them from adopting a black cat in mid-October and then waiting until Halloween to do it? If this was the case, then it would actually be extending the cruelty to the animal by leaving it in the care of these "nut jobs" for even longer. And if they do ban adoptions, it will just prevent loving people from adopting animals that need good homes. While I'm sure that most people will wait, others may just adopt a different cat and the black cat could miss its window of opportunity to be adopted.

I'm for it because people who really want the cat will come back in a week or two for the cat. The nut jobs won't. And there are people who think let's get a black cat for Halloween and if we like him he can stay and be a pet. These people have no idea whats involved in taking care of a cat and they either let the cat go or take it back to the shelter.
They want the cat to be a decoration for their party and they don't understand the cat has too much to deal with being in a new home and all.

I am for it! Pets shouldn't be adopted to just anyone anyway. But if you love the cat and you really want it, what is the harm in a little wait just to make sure everything goes alright. The shelters are right about this though, I have heard black cats undergo alot over Halloween. I guess the holiday brings out the inner evil in some people. Too bad we don't know who they are so they could have a little taste of their own medicine. At least though we are rest assured that the shelters really do care about the animals and are not trying to push them out the door to which ever tom and Jerry walks by!!

I am for the ban...it is only for one day...and especially if one day can save their life or avoid people torturing them.
There are all kinds of strange people out there adopting animals and not respecting and treating them right. There was a cat that was adopter at a local shelter, and one of the volunteers when he went to work...he found the cat that was adopted by a man few days ago...but the cats' ear has been cut and was bleeding... =/
The ban is a safe measure...since their job is to protect the animals and working for their welfare....being cautious is a good thing!!!
I personally have adopted a stray black cat and she had babies....so now I have 3 cats and 2 of them are black...I can kind of relate to it....
People may adopt black cats for their halloween decoration...like putting them in a cage in front of their house or something...and they would probably just throw them out on the streets...which would make potentially future domestic cat, abandonned stray cats...and the weather is getting chilly....and rainy...

I have a view on either side, the way i see it, some people aren't nut jobs. Maybe they were already looking for a cat and they wanted a black cat. Having a black cat around Halloween is cool but it doesn't mean the people will abuse the cat. But some people could be nut jobs. But maybe a background check should be done since some people could be nuts. I think that adoption agencies should be extra careful of the adopter, but not completely ban it since some people just want a worm fuzzy cat.
P.S. They shouldn't cut down on the chance for a cat to miss getting a home.

I don't really know. With all of the stray cats running around, I can't imagine anyone paying for a cat to hurt. People are crazy though, so who knows?
I don't think that banning them on Halloween would really solve anything either. People sometimes "celebrate" Halloween during the entire month of October so banning during the entire month seems like it would be better, but that's really not an option.
As an aside, I have a solid black cat and the thought of someone harming him makes me want to puke.

I think it is reasonable. Since people see black cats as a symbol of Halloween, and might use the cat for something other than a pet it makes since to protect the kitties. If someone really wants a black cat as a pet they can go back to the shelter on November 1st.

I am for the ban! They have been doing this for YEARS here in So. Cal. Apparently in the past people would not only adopt them to do horrible things to them..but many people would adopt black cats to use as props as part of their halloween costume and then return the cat the next day!!!

I think its a safe precaution to protect the cats, there are wack jobs out there that do horrible things to black cats, and I hear in England, to white cats too. Apparently, white cats are the black cats there. Anyway, I think as long as cats aren't being abused because the shelters won't let people adopt black cats, than its a good idea.
