Should it be sugar free? Should it be like a carrot cake or something along that lines? Or can I just let him tear into a regular 'ol cake? I don't want to give him something that may make him sick. Can he have chocolate?

He's not gonna remember or care, so just get what you want, and what will look nice in pictures. The cake is more for your memory of the event, not his. Any kind of cake in small portions is fine.

Well, the decorations on the cake are really up to the parents. The baby won't care either way... he'll just tear into it and get it all over himself.

I'd be careful with carrot cake, as some of them do have nuts and that's a choke hazard. I also wouldn't suggest something completely chocolate, as that can be very rich and can upset anyone's stomach, not just a baby's.

Go with vanilla, yellow, or marble... something that will be easier on his system. And do yourself a favor... put trash bags or something on the floor, and have the baby wipes ready when he gets ready to tear into it. You'll have icing EVERYWHERE!

You can give whatever kind of cake you'd like. Sure he can have chocolate. He's not going to eat very much anyway he's only 1. Just let him tear into a regular ol cake! :o)

What I did was give my son a chocolate iced cupcake. The pictures were really cute since you could see what a mess he made! I wouldn't give your child the entire cake, just a small cupcake would be fine. That way, there is much less waste, and other kids love to eat cupcakes!

My son loved homemade carrot cake! So much so that I made one for him yearly. Even his preschool buddies enjoyed a carrot sheet cake I made for his 4th birthday, and you know how little ones can be!

Any cake will work. FYI....If you have a Wal-mart near you and buy the bigger cake from them they will give you a "1st cake" for the baby for free

your baby can have anything you want him/her to have. I would avoid nuts due to choking and allergy reasons.

For my daughters 1st birthday we got her a big cake from Costco with a princess and a castle on the icing. She stuck her face in it, priceless. She really only ate the icing. It was great.
