It depends on whether you are talking about distilled water or mineral water. Distilled water, if used constantly will harm you plant, as it will use up all the minerals in the soil and get nothing from the water for replacement.
Tap water and mineral water both have minerals in them which can be used by the plant for its growth.
Of course, house plants tend to be very hardy. I had a plant at work that lived off of nothing but coffee, and it did nothing but get bigger (shows those people who say that coffee stunts your growth, eh?).

its not the water that helps the growth of plants. its the nutritions present in the soil.
Water helps as an agency to carry such minerals and nutritions to the plant.
you may have confused with the rain water, as it contains nitrogens from the air and nitrogen is necessary ingradient.
But some plants do have nitrogen fixing nodes in which case, it never matters.
So, If the soil contains all the necessary stuffs, then the main job of water is to dissolve(because it is universal solvent) and to carry into the plant.

Conclude your self, will the plant identify whether the water being supplied is tap water or whatever.

The chlorine in tap water isn't that great for finicky plants although if the plant is healthy it probably doesn't matter.
Let the tap water sit for a couple days and the chlorine will evaporate.
Don't waste your money on bottled water.
Aquarium stores have products that will purify the water like Fritzyme.

There is a difference in the ph levels that create better growth from the air compared to the sink, plus tap water has sediment that comes off the pipes over a long period of time.
