Because it would never work.......If someone insists on being stupid enough to "NOT" wear a seat belt, he/she will buckle the seat belt behind or under the seat. How is a computer going to tell whether there is a person there?

As well, for all those who think that mandatory buckling up is a violation of their personal freedoms and rights.....If you don't want to protect yourself, and insist on risking serious injury, and possibly death....go for it....Just sign a waiver that no-one else is to blame but yourself. If I make a mistake and accidentally hit your car, I will assume responsibility for the accident....but I will "NOT" assume blame for your head going through the windshield. Pay for your own medical bills. Don't expect the general public (through higher medicare premiums and higher insurance premiums) to pay for your stubbornness. The same applies to motorcycle helmets.

They did.. my brother had a '74 Mercury Comet with some type of seatbelt interlock. I think public backlash did away with it... turned it from an active system to the passive ones we have today. Now all cars flash a light on the dash and "ding" to bug you so much you put your belt on. Some new cars also have occupant sensors in the front passenger seat which controlls the dash airbag deployment, and also require the shoulder belt be buckled if it detects weight on the seat.

I actually heard some company made one that you could put the car into gear if it didnt have the seat belt fastened. I guess they went with that so that someone could warm up their car in the winter or the like.

that's a dumb idea. that's the same as making a car that can't break the speed limit. taking away people's basic freedoms and trust isn't what this country is about. it's not the car company's job to babysit the car driver and make sure he/she has their seatbelt on. it's their decision whether to wear one or not. they know the consequences if they don't wear one and are in an accident.

I think that not evryone wants to start their car while in it.Some like to smoke a ciggarette(load the car,etc..) outside the car ,while the car warms up.Some car owners (mostly luxurious car owners) just dont want others telling them what to do with what they own (funny i know but true!). Id love to see more answers to this question!

I totally agree with alien also all these bells and whistles that are put on cars cause your payment and your ins. to go up. Think about it do we really want all this crap and why not instill personal responsibility.

How about when there is an emergency??? The last thing you want while you are trying to escape from a situation would be trying to do up you seatbelt.
