I'm 17 years old and my dad has not supported me in any way shape or form....i literally saw him 3 years ago when he told me he didn't want me in his life anymore. He got remarried and had a daughter....shes 4 years old n i never saw her b4. I like my last name a lot. The thing with my name is its christy then my moms maiden name then my dads last name. I was wondering am i old enough to make it christy my dads last name then my moms last name? My mom really doesn't want me to do this, but i need to move on and get over him even being active in my life. What should I do?

How come your Mom doesn't want you to do this? Maybe you need to sit down and tell her that you don't want to have your Dad's last name anymore b/c he doesn't want to acknowledge you. You are old enough to pick your name...But it would be better if your Mom was with you 100%. You will need to see a lawyer to help get this done.

At 17, you may need your mom's help (and maybe dad's, too?) to legally change your name, but when you turn 18 you're legally an adult so it would probably be easier. You'll need to make sure you have your birth certificate, Social Security card, etc because you'll have to show a lot of kinds of proof. There's also the choice of holding off changing your name (although I understand why you want to!) until you get married, just to avoid changing it twice. It's also easier to change it after marriage for some reason.

You can go to the courthouse and ask what the process and procedures are for changing your name. Basically you file the necessary paperwork, see a judge and tell him/her you want to change your name to:... It's done. Once the judge has agreed, you will need to have the court documents duplicated to change your social security information and any other offical documents, like drivers license etc. changed to the new name.

You probably cannot do this at the age of 17 without parental permission. Until the age of 18, your mom will need to approve. So you either need to talk to her about why you really feel you need this and hope she changes her mind, or will at least help you.

Or you need to wait. If you choose to wait, I suggest going by your "new" name. Talk to teachers, boss, etc and this way they'll be able to adapt to the idea.
