The war started in Sept /39. Hitler had a pact with Stalin. Western Europe was not prepared so France and the low countries fell very quickly. England and the Commonwealth countries kept the Western front open. Had England fallen, it would have been a total disaster. For reasons we will never know, Hitler betrayed Stalin and attacked the USSR,opening up the Eastern front. Not wanting to deal with a nazi or communist Europe, FDR persuaded the Americans, or to be more exact, Japan persuaded theUS to get involved and come to the aid of the allies. This enabled the allies in the west to finally get a foothold on the continent and move to Germany. There is no denying, that without Russia, England would probably have fallen. However to say the USSR did it alone is as foolish as saying the USA did it alone. All the allies contributed and I agree the USSR made a very major contribution to the effort. In fact they were the first to reach Berlin. By the way, Vietnamese did win their war. Hollywood tells the whole thing differently, but that was all American propaganda.

My brother & brother-in-law both servrd in Europe with the Canadian army. I was born near the end of the war.

Well I think the USSR was part of the Allies so the yes the Allies won and the USSR won. If you mean who had more impact in the Allies winning then yes the USSR fought longer and with more victory then anyone else. The US only came in at the end and tipped the scales of the Western Allies.

Although if you think about the fact that after the war, half of Europe was controlled by the Soviet Union then I guess they won the most in all.

And I thought the Vietmamese did win the Vietnamese war. The US certainly didn't.

Yes. My Grandfather survived the wars against USSR during WW2. I also agree, that the "Allies" didn't win- after all, in the end of WW2 half of Europe was occupied by a hostile fascist force.

This was touted as a victory just because the war was initially an issue of german fascist expansionism, and not stalinist fascist expansionism, though the difference is quite small, in my opinion.

Though, I'd hardly call the voluntary slaughter of their own people that the USSR practiced a victory for anyone else than for Stalin's egoistical scheming.

As for the person who asked this question- remember this, YOU don't really know what happened to the soldiers in WW2, you are still fed the same propaganda about some "Great Patriotic Front", but in reality you were just another fascist state. Your grandfather DIED, and thus never told you what he went through.

This is NOT an assumption, but it IS fact. The russians signed a non-aggressive treaty with Germany after Germany had invaded and taken over several countries in Europe. That is to say, they agreed to not attack one another. Russia was sitting pretty UNTIL Germany broke their word and invaded Russia. Stalin was knocking at the door of the USA for war supplies and equipment to fight Germany. The USA flew thousands of tons of war supplies "over the hump" (the Himalaya mountains) and even provided a fighter airplane know as the Aircobra to the Russians. True, the Russians lost millions of people during the war, in fact, they were within an eyelash of losing the war. That is one of the consequences of one madman (Stalin) trusting another one (Hitler). Anyway, Russia was able to reverse the course of the war at Stalingrad and start driving the Germans from Russia. NOW Stalin was at the door of the USA to hurry us up to invade France so that would reduce the number of Germans he would have to fight on the eastern front. Well, as anyone should know, the USA,Britain, Canada, and Australia were building up our forces to prepare for D Day and at the same time, fighting the Japanese in the Pacific theater, a theater of operations of WW2 where Russia was practically non-existant. I THINK that your opinion that Russia won the war is either a lie or a total lack of understanding. The truth is that we ALL won the war. That is-Britain, Australia,Canada, USA, Russia, and many smaller forces from the over run countries. So, to answer your question-yes, I think you do not know what you are talking about.

There is no doubt that Russia suffered more than it's share of losses in WW II, but one look at their tactics and it becomes somewhat understandable. The reality tho' is that if there had not been a Western front, the Russians on the Eastern front would have been crushed. Probably exactly like the US & Britten would have been if there hadn't been an Eastern front.
Get the picture yet?????? One without the other would have had one bad time of it in WW II.

Dont forget tho' that the US was fighting two wars at the same time and Russia was only fighting one.

Why would you discount the contribution from the allies in WWII?
*********************************************************
three main reasons for Germany's defeat:

* Unexpectedly stubborn resistance from the Soviet Union
* The large-scale supply of arms and equipment from the US to the Soviet Union, under the lend-lease agreement
* The success of the Western Allies in the struggle for air supremacy.

The Americans supplied Soviet Union with 450,000 lorries. Of course, in the final stages of the war this significantly increased the Soviet Unions armed forces' mobility, decreased losses and brought, perhaps, greater success than if Soviet Union had not such help.

Also "we all seem to forget that Soviet Russia was instrumental, together with Nazi Germany, in starting the Second World War, attacking Poland in September 1939. Russian and German forces even held joint victory parades in Polish towns. Russia was allied with Nazi Germany, and Russia only joined the fight again Germany after Germany attacked Russia in 1941. In Russian history, the war only started in 1941."

Thousands of Allied seamen died getting supplies to Russia , war materials , food , fuel , so you could fight .
Others died in Europe fighting the Germans ,pulling them in 2 directions not just 1 .
So, you did have Allies .

If it were not for the allied forces, Russia would have fell. remember, it was the allies who were dropping supplies to the Russians to aid them in fighting the Germans.

No, I know you don't have a clue.

Of course your leaders might, just might of had something to do with the whole thing. You do know the whole leadership of the army was shot by, 1 guess only, right your leader that paragon of killing Joe him self. We could discuss what else that creep did but I suspect facts are not of interest to you.
