Usually due to the majority of the society that views being extremely thin is much more acceptable than being overweight. In schools, girls face peer pressure when their circle of friends are thin and beautiful. Or when they were cruelly mocked by others. All these probably have great impact to their self-esteem and self worth. Therefore they may choose desperate measures to be as thin as their friends.

Some girls AND boys decide to starve themselves because society tells us, over and over again, that thin is beautiful and desirable. Often this is compounded by sports that emphasize a smaller body, such as running, dance, gymnastics, horseback riding, and swimming.
In my case, by the BMI I know that I'm not overweight. Still, I'm larger than my twin, and so I feel pressure to loose weight. I don't enjoy running a lot (due to "loose" ankles) Therefore, it would be tempting for me to choose to stop eating. This is a method that everyone knows works, both scientifically and from collective social experience. My health teacher insisted that anorexia comes from low self-esteem and poor mental health. Newsweek stated that it is genetic. I think its a society created condition.

Yeah some do, some because they are being abused and its a sympton of their self hate. Some to control a body they see changing through pubety some because of mental illness. And some for reasons unclear and/or unknown. These last ones often die.Wish this was'nt the case because as I get older I see less and less I feel is ugly and more and more I feel is beautiful.

Most of it is psychological. They do not see themselves thin or they will see somebody else thinner than them and decide it is not enough. Sometimes it isn't always their fault. Some people are thin because of their metabolism. However, the majority are just trapped in a mental illness.

Probably low self esteem.
Also, sometimes anorexia and other eating disorders can occur because it is a control issue in the lives of these women, that, how much they eat is the only thing they percieve in their lives that they can control.
That's really just one theory.

it is a warped sense of reality, they have low self-esteem with a flawed thought of what beauty is, most Anorexics are teenage girls and elderly men. That is when the pressure of being beautiful is at it's worst. And neither stage is in their right mind.

Insecurity & low self esteem, social pressures, the media portraying skinny as more desireable & more in control of one's life.....skinny = power and all that crap. Don't buy into any of it, be happy with yourself the way you are. Take care : )
