God allows suffering as a consequence of man's choices in defiance of His holiness (people DO NOT understand the concept of holiness). Of course, many innocent people suffer as well. Even those who love the Lord and believe He cares about them and their daily lives will suffer. The Bible points out that even the earth and creations suffers because of sin (Romans 8:18-22) and like man, is waiting for a time when sin will be removed as the curse it is.
I know that God cares about me and my daily life, and even the smallest detail, because He involves Himself continually, sometimes in ways that surprise me and catch me off guard. When I am really frustrated or struggling I ask Him questions, and He always answers - not necessarily right away. But He does answer through His Word, through other people.
Let me give you some important advice. People tend to judge God in human terms and God is not human. He is other. He stands alone and must be judged and known by His own character, power and merit. This is between you and God.
One last point - it is the Christian community that has, through out history, gone to the ends of the earth to address the suffering of people.

By God I think you mean the one God of monotheistic religions. If so then the following is true for all of these faiths.
One God says:
1.theres heaven and hell.
2. this life is not eternal, we will die and be judged on our actions.
3. there is a hereafter which is eternal.
4. in order for humans to be judged God gave free will to humans so they may decide and create their own fate in this world and in the hereafter.
Therefore, since humans have free will, since humans will be judged based on their actions on earth, since God is all Fair He will wait when each persons life is over, and then send them where they deserve to be. And hence the following information is true for all the monotheistic religions, we may conclude logically that humans are free to chose whatever they want, and just because it doesnt look like God doesnt interfere with any one of their bad actions, does not mean they will not be accountable for it.
Edit: The non existance of God makes everything so much worse. It simply means that people can do whatever they want, and not really pay for it if they dont ever get caught by the police. A lot of people have died that way on earth, and therefore they got away with it. Does that feel right to u?
Peace

Big question here from you, average answer from me. I think the simplest way to think of this is to think of parent child relationships. If your 3 year old wants to eat a whole huge box of chocolates on an empty stomach, you probably would forbid it for the child's own good. But if you gave the child free will and let him do it, would he suffer ? Yes,vomit, stomach ache, diarhea, etc. God is the Father and we are the children. He has given us free will. It isn't God that is causing the suffering anymore than it is the parent causing the suffering. God made the 10 commandments so we would be happy, content and all that good stuff. I am 55, have been a Christian all my life and spiritual growth is like anything else, as time marches on, wisdom comes from it. God sees life from the upper side of the beautiful weaving and we see it from the underside with all the loose ends hanging out and a mess. But the finished product is marvelous to behold, life in heaven. God is not a "gimmie God". He has 3 answers to prayer, yes,no, and wait. How long ? As long as it takes for God's will. It took Joseph in the Bible 27 years after he was sold by his brothers as a slave to become the leader who save a nation from drought etc. But he never gave up on God because he knew God knew best. I hate to suffer, but I've had a lot and have also seen miracles come from my suffering. Here is one example. I became ill with a chronic illness and kept working, eventually fell into an extremely severe depression for 8 months, fetal position on the couch with caretaker for me and no one thought i would live. When I finally came out of it, my chronic illness was gone because I think I needed tons of rest and wouldn't slow down. ???? #2 My MIL died of cancer at age 62,kind of young for the average age of death. She was a magnificent person. But in the years following her divorce, her family fell apart in very ugly ways and if she had lived, I think it would have been hell on earth for her to watch. I can't explain everything, but I do know in my mind's view that God's will is always the best. This may be contoversial, but the New Orleans disaster ? One question God might ask is, why did build in such an unsafe location and did you ever ask Me first if it was a good idea, just like one might ask their earthly parents for advise.

God gave us free will, alot of problems in the world today are man made problems. God didnt create aids, wars, etc. Man did.
There will be a time when Jesus comes back, he will take care of his people. If you believe. Why wouldnt you want to believe, we all have to believe in something to get us through life. God cares

God gave us free will and we turned our backs on Him. In His great wisdom and mercy He is allowing us to suffer the consequences of our choices instead of imposing His will on us. He is giving us plenty of time to come to our senses or prove Him wrong. We obviously do need Him, and He will take care of all these problems soon. But for right now, He is taking care of His people and does care and help with their daily lives. We all have tough lessons we need to learn, though, and He would be doing us no favor by taking away all problems at this time.

All you need is faith the size of a mustard seed. You would certainly know if God cared about you because you'd be in perfect alignment with him without a shadow of a doubt. Furthermore, he would keep finding ways of drawing you closer and closer to him so that you may always know that he loves you. It's absolutely that feeling, that KNOWING without question.
We were given a choice of free will. Satan tried to prove to God that man can live without God's guidance. However, we were designed in God's image to need God's guidance so Satan will be proven wrong once and for all, and believe it that God will put an end to Satan's reign. He WILL put an end to long suffering. God is slow to anger but he will ACT. He WILL put right all the wrongs. KNOW it.

That is a question most people have, even Christians. See, Christians are not infalliable, we doubt, question, and even sin even in our belief. The only thing that differs between Christians and those who have yet to accept Christ, is that Christians know where all these things need to be brought to...Jesus. To repent, and accept the forgiveness once we do. So beyond that, and getting back to the point here...
Let us take a look to Matthew 24:1-8 to answer this one through God's word:
"Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. "Do you see all these things?" he asked. "I tell you the truth, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."
As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"
Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains."
What we are experiencing today are just little things compared to what will happen. God never said this life was going to be easy, nice looking all the time, or sometimes fair...but He has promised us He will provide us a way out when things really get bad...and that way out is Jesus. To accept Him, provides us a one way ticket out of here when the end of times hits. Those left behind will have a battle of thier life at hand.
So keep this in mind, God does care hence why he sent Jesus. If He did not care, He would not have done that. All we have to do as humans and His children, is accept that truth and gift. All it takes is a glimmer of belief in an insane world around us. To choose to see a glimmer of light, hope in a world full of maddness. God never said when we come to Him we will never see junk again, quite the contrary. We will see more of it, because our faith and belief will be tested more so not by Him so much...but by the deciever who has plans to keep people from God all the time.
So as in Matthew 24:4, it states to watch out that no one decieves you...that includes the deciever himself.
I appriciate your question. For without questions, even the same ones that are heard over and over again...and answered over and over again...the truth can rarely ever be revealed the way it needs to.

God cares for all of His children. You obviously ask a question from a one-sided perspective and show how little you know about God. Read the manual, it's called the Bible, therein lies all of the information you need to get that crucial "other side of the story" that will make you approach your question with a more well rounded base of knowledge. I imagine that when a believer thinks it goes like:
"God would care about himself and his Son if he had one, and He may do it in ways that could be different from ours, at least at first sight. If He is caring about His Son -and He is having a rough deal- what could stop Him doing the same for all the living beings He called into existence ?"
On top of that you can see all kind of good coming out of all kind of evil, even if our vision is limited.
