Purdah is for males usually, its more like an arabian traditional thing to wear, not basicly related to islam, and as for Niqab, its a sort of Hijab that covers the whole body of the female, except eyes, and sometimes it even hide eyes, its not a must at all, islam just ordered the women to wear Hijab, and its not meant to be a hair cover, its meant to be a decent clothing that prevent her from being sexy or attractive to stranger males, but Niqab is usually recommended for both extremely beautiful or extremely ugly ladies, and I think you can figure out the reason for yourself.

Purdah - - -
OK, it was a custom that was adopted in the 7th century that is actually more cultural then it is religious. It is still practiced in some countries by various religions, not just Muslims. I do not practice it, I think that as long as a woman knows how to act respectfully, and "Like a lady" as my mother would say, and men also know how to respect women, there is no need for it.

Niqab - - -
It is not mandatory in Islam, but is a choice for optimal modesty for a Muslim woman. My husband actually will not let me wear it in fear for my safety. I have friends that do wear it, and they live a very harmonious life. Just like a tattoo and piercings, it is a persons right to do what they want.

Purdah /Niqab/Hijab is the creation of male mentality and male dominance. For me nigab is the symbol of male dominance and women's subordinate position. It has nothing to do with any kind of respect of women that many muslims and islamic scholars are saying. Unfortunately, like almost all cultures and civilizations, men were and are the dominant rulers and decision-makers. In Islamic society customary laws consider woman the property of man - man's honor and pride. If the honor is dishonored, the man is allowed to wipe out the scar, even by killing his fiancee, wife, sister and mother. The definition of honor is the definition of men mentality and his historical dominance on all aspects of life, including marital and familial relationship. He is the ultimate truth and he is the owner of his woman, in the forms of fiancee, wife, sister and mother and even female cousins and other close female relatives. He has the "divine" and traditional duty of protecting woman, not for her happiness and rights, but his satisfaction and rights. He enjoys full rights on her, but she knows only one undisputed right, that is to accept the rule of male members of her family and clan.
