No-JD is wrong...MP's cannot enforce german laws on german highways. That's why he waited to pul you over. But he can't write you a ticket-what would he put on there? Sounds like they were hassling you or thought you might be DUI. Very suspicious!! I'd complain to the provost marshall

Interesting question. Since he did not ticket you I'm sure he was doing you a favor. One could look at the job of the military police in Germany as keeping the peace and ensuring good relations with the German populace, So yes he may have been able to ticket you, or pull you over and have the German police ticket you. Either way you got off easy.

I do not think he could have given you a ticket for the speeding, but from what I know, inside their jurisdiction, they can pull you over for no specific reason, unlike other police.

there is an area in florida where the highway goes by the air force base, and the MPs pull people over there all the time (outside the gated base)

Well you did not get ticketed. He was just giving you a warning....No I am sure his powers do not extend beyond the gates of the base. However, sporting USA plates...he's telling you "don't be an ugly American and respect the laws of the host country...you are a guest here." You should have thanked him for that lesson...as a civilian on that base it is your responsibility to behave as every one else, especially base personnel...else you make them all look bad. Your "civil rights" do not extend beyond the borders of the USA. Is it any wonder why the world thinks Americans are an arrogant bunch?

The Military Police has no jurisdiction off Post in Germany, the only speeding ticket you could get would be issued by the German Police. One word of advise, the penalties for speeding are much harsher in Germany, if you do it often enough you could lose the privilege to drive in Germany.

An MP (or any cop) is not going to pull you over for entertainment, or to give you a ticket that they KNOW won't stand up in court!

If you don't want to be punished for breaking the law, you have two choices:

(a) Don't get caught

(b) Don't break the law

Which one do you think is easier?

As a former a MP and a cop, the answer is yes! Once on his post he has full authority to stop you! He was copmpletely in his right. You should consideryourself very fortunate that he just gave you a warning and did not notify the German authorities. Thier penalties a far stiff than US laws. He mearly gave you a warning and informed you you had broken the law, consider yourself lucky

Unless it is a military vehicle, the MP's have no jurisdiction off the military reservation, unless they are in pursuit of someone which began on post.

Does not sound right to me. Contact the Provost Marshall's Office nearest you and get clarification.

Yes they can. You are a military member and they have jurisdiction over you.
