Static stretching allows muscles to relax, enabling you to extend your range of motion & also helps you keep your muscles relaxed when you kick. I believe it was the founder of the Kodokan (Judo) who said "He who is the master of relaxation is also the master of tension".

Dynamic should be used before a tournament or fight after Static as it greatly decreases your chacnes of injury. Static will improve your overall flexibility over time but it's a long process and uncomfortable. Dynamic should be used before or during training and when used in conjunction with static helps a lot but on its own will only improve your stretching for your workout period and help you to loosen up, it's not as effective in the long term unless combined with static.

I agree with yupchagee, in static stretching, it allows you to push your limit and then relax which in turn allows for more flexibility.

as with weight training, it breaks down the muscle, then the relaxation helps the muscle to be more pliable for further stretching.

Dynamic stretching on the other hand keeps the blood flow moving to the "torn" muscle tissue which keeps the repair process ongoing so the muscle doesn't have time to "stretch out" and remain pliable.

it would prob'ly be better to do a combinatin of the two to allow the muscle remain p[liable while allowing fresh oxygentaed blood to reach it for rebuilding later.
