2000 Escort ZX2 - what's the trick to getting the pins out of the caliper? I can get the caliper off, get the disc off, remove the springs, and compress the piston, I just can't get the pins out. They're pretty crusty. I tried vice grips but can't grab it anywhere. I tried a punch and hammer but they don't budge.

You may need new caliper pins and rubber boots. On those cars, the pins are notorious for seizing up, causing premature brake pad wear. Go to any Ford or Mazda store, to purchase new ones. When installing the new pins, make sure you use CALIPER PIN SLIDE GREASE, not ANTI-SEIZE. Also take care to re-install the pad shims correctly, when re-installing the pads. One more thing to note, make sure the flat metal piece that goes on the steering knuckle, where the inboard pads sit, are not missing, or fall off, during re-installation. Hope this helps.

Go to your local AUTOZONE store and buy a spray can of "PB BLASTER" soak the pins with it let it sit for about fifteen (15) minutes then using a punch slightly smaller than the pins and know them out.The are just rusted in place and THERE IS NOTHING THAT "PB BLASTER" CANNOT LOOSEN,buy new pins to replace the rusted ones.
