Because unsustainable ones will eventually run out. There's also a pretty strong argument that the likes of oil, coal and gas are direct contributors to the so called greenhouse effect. While there are obvious problems with nuclear fission. If they can ever get it working nuclear fusion might be a different matter.

There are two reasons for this. The first is simple, we are too dependant on foreign oil for our own safety. Everything comes from the price of oil by barrel. This, by the way, is the result of breakdown of plant and animal life in the era of the dinosaur. Like the dinosaur, it will soon be extinct at the rate of our demand for it. Second, the oil industry is polluting our air and our atmosphere and we need to be able to sustain clean air (and water) and realize that what we do is having a very definite and negative impact on the world around us. Therefore we need a safe, sustainable energy source that doesn't pollute the world we live in and continues for our children and our grandchildren.

Both of these above me are great answers.. Also, I think that as an American, politically it would be better to be less dependant of the middle east, venesula etc. for oil resources.. Also these sustainable energy sources are release less greenhouse gases and carbon into the atmosphere so they are better for the environment.

Sustainable energy is good because it means that my laptop will always have power so I can come on here and answer questions. If we run out of energy then it could spell a new dark age of mankind.

because as someone else mentioned, other sources will eventually run out
sustainable energy also means a cleaner environment, you think about heavily industrialized areas and what do you see? smog! Regardless of your views on global warming, is it not better for our health that we have cleaner air?
just something to consider when writing up your answer...:)
