The confusion we are having is in the word "software". All data on a computer is software as opposed to hardware, which means the nuts and bolts. Mac OS 9.1 is an operating system. If your question is "Can I install Mac OS X onto a computer that already has Mac OS 9.1", then the answer is probably. You get the answer to which computers will permit installation of OS X in your other question. Installing OS X doesn't cause any problem with using OS 9.1 so long as your Startup Disk Control Panel in OS 9.1 is version 9.1 or later. That is how you will conveniently restart into OS X after you are started up to 9.1

Seattle is correct if you add the disclaimer "with Apple's blessing and support". It is also possible to install OS X up to version 10.2.8 on older Macs, as early as 1996, if they were PCI architecture and had a processor type 603 or 604. If they have a G3 or G4 processor upgrade, you may be able to install Mac OS X version 10.3 and 10.4 but for full info, see the web site listed below.

If you have an older version of OS X, say 10.2.x, then software written for 10.4 may not work on it. Older software should work on newer versions of OS X.
