Did your mother-in-law use an electric stove, or a gas stove? I mean, it's POSSIBLE that a storm could cause an interruption in the electricity, which might allow the soup to cool off...which might lead to spoilage. But it would take at least a few hours for perfectly good soup to spoil, so this idea seems "iffy". And if she used a gas stove, it would be unaffected by the weather!

I can see how adding cabbage to soup (or to anything) might add an unpleasant smell, but that would happen (almost) as soon as the cabbage was added. I like cabbage myself, but I avoid cooking it at home because it stinks up the whole house.

My ex Mother-in-Law always told me a thunderstorm will turn crab soup sour. The only way it would not is if you didn't put corn in it. I never believed this and said some things (behind her back of course) Last summer it happened to me. I swore she put a curse on me. It was in the refrigerator and I when I took it out it was almost like a foam on top and it tasted so sour. I couldn't believe it. I finally saw it with my own eyes. So my answer is Yes, it can defiantly ruin your soup.

No wonder it smelled bad. Who would ever think of putting cabbage in that soup, or any seafood soup for that matter? What a good way to ruin a perfectly good crab.

Power of suggestion is awful strong.

Don't you think she could have INTENTIONALLY altered the soup so that she would be "right."

Wow, that is gullible, why don't you try making your own soup during a storm and see what happens. Of course to be true to the experiment you will need to make a batch while it is not storming for comparison.

So, do you still believe you will go blind and grow hair on your palms too?

Fascinating. I have never heard of this. I make crab stock and chowder all the time in the winter when it rains. But I never add corn or cabbage. I dunno. That's a new one for me!
