I had two dogs that both got ticks. I wouldn't burn them off. I used a cloth and pulled the tick off, then put ointment on the hole. It really does cause a hole. The tick will continue to feed off the blood of the dog and if you don't get rid of the tick, it will eventually kill the dog. Also, infection can play a part so put some sort of ointment on the wound. Kill the tick. Flush it or step on it or something.
I can't stand ticks. Not only are they bad for animals, they can cause lime disease in people.

Deer ticks can cause lyme disease. Do NOT burn off or apply vaseline or anything like that to the tick..to do so can cause the tick to release toxins into your dog and the burning could also injure you or the dog.
Simply take a pair of tweezers or even a gauze square, paper towel or tissue, grab the tick as close to the dogs skin as possible being careful not ot squeeze the ticks body, and give a quick, straight, direct pull then discard the tick in a small plastic bag in the trash.
If a piece of the head should remain don't worry, it will work it's way out. Simply clean the area with peroxide and apply a thin coat of neosporin. There may be a bump and/or red spot for a few days, that is normal so don't worry.

Make sure to use Frontline Plus on your dog so he won't pick up more ticks or if he does the Frontline will kill it.

Also make sure to get a Heartworm/Lyme/Erlichia test done on your dog yearly.

they feed on the host's blood and swell and become engorged with the host's blood. You have to make sure that you remove the entire tick not by pulling b/c the head can remain lodged; if you have a magnifying glass, you can take a better look. I have tried vaseline and then wait until the tick backs out and then remove it with tweezers or paper towel, you can put it in a jar in case you have to take to a vet to identify whether it is a deer tick which causes lyme disease even in dogs. I would put some triple antibiotic ointment on the location. I would also contact the vet for his recommendation as to giving dose of antibiotics as precautionary measure. Your vet will be best at this recommendation. There are other types of ticks which are will not cause any disease but the only way to tell is to have someone identify what type of tick it is. Dogs can get lyme disease which causes pain, and arthritis type of symptoms sometimes causing the animal not to be able or difficulty using its leg or legs. The animal will have to be treated with antibiotics. Even a dog that has been vaccinated for lyme can still contract it.

I would take that dog right away to the vet. It is dangerous to the dog, can cause all kinds of problems.

They bite it and suck its blood, and may infect the dog. I would try burning them off ASAP, but be careful not to hurt the dog!
