Yes, my cat was doing the same exact thing for the longest time. The solution is a litter called Cat Attract. It is the best stuff ever made. It is a little pricey, but if you were anything like me it didn't matter what the cost to get the cat to stop peeing on the furniture.
Anyway, you can get it at Petsmart, Petco or on-line. It has something special in it that makes the cat want to pee on it and it works like a charm. The good news is, you won't have to use it forever, after a month or two you can slowly start adding your regular cat litter little by little. Soon your cat will be using the litter box without any guidance.
Also, in the Cat Attract you will find a little brouchure with everything you ever wanted to know about your cat and her litter box.
I did a quick search for it and I found this website that sells it:

Having the couch steamed probably wasn't enough. When a cat or dog first urinates on something, you need to blot up as much as you can, then use an enzyme cleaner specifically for pet urine. Follow the directions exactly. If you use water on a pet stain all you are doing is spreading the urine over a larger area and deeper into whatever they urinated on. Animals have a tremendously keen sense of smell far superior to humans and once they urinate in a spot they will do it again if they still smell the urine there even if you can't smell it yourself.
You can put aluminum foil on the couch, but that means you will have to do it all the time. You can try a citrus spray as cats don't like the smell of citrus. Pet stores carry it. You can sit by the couch with a squirt gun and let the cat have it when it jumps up on the couch, but NEVER let it see that it's you who squirted it otherwise it will know it's okay to go up there when you aren't around.
Males and females that are still able to reproduce sometimes urinate or spray on men's clothing because they are able to smell the phermones. So keep men's clothes out of the cat's reach.

Oh, that is hard
My best answer is for a couple days keep the litter box on the couch where they usually go also but some of their feces in the litter so they smell it. (that way you introduce the litter box, and you encourage the behavior of going in the litter box, 2nd when the cats get the idea of the litter box, lock them up in a room for about a week (hopefully a big room) but keep the box with them for then it should be a fairly new enviorment so they will go in the place where they usually went (in the litterbox ) yet instead of on the couch but in on the corner of a room. FInally when they get the idea of going inside the litter box on the floor, then you can open the house again to them, and make sure ifyou move the location of the litter box always place them in the box a couple times so they KNOW where it is. I hope this helps.

Apparently there may be not enough litter in th ebox, they do not like the litter, or there is someothing else bothering them and that is the only way they know to get your attention. They can't talk, they can only act out to let their owners know if something is not right. Cats are highly intelligent and they are possibly trying to tell you something, especially if this is something that just started out of no where.
There could also be a chemical used on the coach within the colors or fibers that is attracting them as well. Get some pet spray that you can purchase at the pet store that is used to tell the pets where NOT to go.

A cat's failure to urinate appropriately in the litter box may have several causes. A dirty litter box may cause a cat to avoid the box. One cat may faithfully use a box that is only cleaned once or twice a week, while another cat may avoid a box that has been used just once. Urine contains odors that identify the individual and mark a cat's territory. The location of food, water and safe places to rest are linked to a cat's sense of security within its territory. If these are disturbed or if a sensitive cat is disturbed for any reason, it may reaffirm its territorial claim and relieve anxiety by urine marking

don't let the cat on the couch. spray the couch with a deoderizer. there are sprays you can get for this at like a petcetera or something. when they go up on the couch give them a little swat on the nose. change the brand of cat litter you are using if its scented then get unscented. could be alot of different things though why they are going on the couch. claiming it as their territory. if your new in the house hold they may be reacting to having someone new there. if its a deoderized brand they may be having allergic reaction to the odor.

Cats are quaint little darlings and quite unpredictable at times. But one thing is sure, they hate to be squirted with water and they hate loud noises.
Some kind of aversion technique may prove effective...ie: when the cat climbs onto the sofa or starts to sniff intently around the sofa, make a sudden loud noise, like a whistle or very loud clap, each time. Or even better, with a spray bottle, direct a sudden sqirt of water at the cat. This will work even better if the cat is unaware that it was you who did the squirting.
It requires some dedication but you should begin to see results.
One other thing is citronella. Cats HATE the smell of citronella. You could dab a little on the sofa but take care that it doesn't stain.
Most importantly, please be careful how you reprimand the little kitty. Their little brains are usually unable to associate your bad mood or any type of slap or physical punishment with their own behavior.
Love from A x

Get a six foot long, two to three feet wide sand box. Place it beside the couch and sleep in it for a couple of days.
