the bread represents the body of christ.

the wine represents his blood that he shed to wash our sins.

the bread and wine is done every sunday at mass in rememberance of christ dying on the cross to save us from sins and at the last supper he said: "do this in memory of me" so we do it to fulfil the scriptures.

Within the teachings of the Catholic church bread and wine are only bread and wine until is has been consecrated by a Priest. From that point forward the bread IS the body of Christ, the wine IS the blood of Christ. To Catholics there is no symbolism. Please know that I am not trying to convince anyone of this I am merely answering the question.

Mark 14:22- Jesus said, "this means my body." (the bread) That bread (unleavened) symbolized his own sinless body of flesh. This he would give in behalf of the future life prospects of mankind.

Mark 14:24- Jesus said, "this means my 'blood of the covenant' which is to be poured out in behalf of many." That wine symbolized his own lifeblood. By means of his shed blood, forgiveness of sins would be possible for those who put faith in it.

The Lord said, "Drink and Eat this in remembrance of Me" He asked this of the disciples at the last supper. It is for all true Christian's to remember Jesus in this way, but not all who do so are of the True faith
