Their are only few nuclear reaction.It is a reaction in which nucleus it self is involved.At the end completely new substances are formed with a liberation of lot of energy called nuclear energy..It can used for either distructive purpose or constructive purpose.We can find the nuclear energy by theory of relativity.
E=M*C*C
Electicity can be made in nuclear reactors.Two istopes are generally used U235(0.7% of total) & U238(99.3% of total)

Since nuclear reaction are chain reaction they are almost uncontrolable.If a thermal neutron collids with U235, 3 extra neutrons are produced.So the reaction will continue untill Uranium exhaust.

On 2Dec 1942 Fermi convert nuclear energy into electricity by removing extra neutrons.

If you smash a couple of atoms together, a whole crap load of energy is released.

The form E=MC^2 is appropriate for this, where the energy released (E) is equal to the mass of the atoms smashed (M) times a constant (C^2) which happens to be the speed of light squared.

Nuclear energy is also a really good excuse for George W. to get pussy with North Korea or Iran. ;-)

all the answers posted so far are good
but think just what is this type of energy how do we define it
it in my book is defined by how we use it
is there a need for 1point 2 google plexes of bombs or is there other uses for it this type of energy do some reserch it is for the next generations to think of how it is defined our older generation has already defined it one way
but it does not have to stay that way anyone can redefine it you may even be able to change e=MC2
right now neuclear energy seems to be the definition of our distruction
