It is the only (other than fetch) that they can do to play with other dogs or humans. It also feels good on their teeth an gums. When they do it with you they are getting your undivided attention.
Ever notice that if you are playing tug a war with your dog and another comes up to take the rope the dog usually brings it back to you. The fetch is they can interract and compete with the other dog to be the first to bring you the ball back.

Dogs in the wild are very complex beings. They often fight for dominance. Tug-a-war is a way that dogs have adopted to fight for this dominace. Though, domesticated dogs are more tame and choose little things like this to "play" for dominance rather than fight for it.

Dogs like to play tug-a-war because they want to loose their first teeth, because they want to have their new teeth fast so they can chew food and bones and dog stuff!! They also like to play tug-a-war becase firstly they like it and secondly they want to satrengthen their new teeth.

Animals are really competitive and usually prove their strengh and superiority by playing or fighting. A dog will play tuf-of-war with their owner or even another dog because they want to prove themselves to both be dominant and sufficient for their owner, a sort of, "I'm the best. Choose me," because dogs' are loyal to their owners, even if you don't love them.. they will love you back.

They just like to have fun. Dogs love playing and burning off energy. Most of all, they just wanna spend time with you and their friends!

Prove the other dog who's more dominant...just think of wild animals when they fight for who gets the girl...something like that but not as violent
