I mean an older parent who was not a good parent, is pennyless, is and always will be an alcoholic, suffers from various ailments, has psychological issues, just someone who really hasn't and now never will contribute anything to me, my family, or society. I just don't see why the hell I should be responsible for that sack of sh*t.

What's usefulness have to do with existence? What's the point of existence if you don't do sh*t?

Too vague. Please clarify!!!

EDIT* - I'm sorry that you have had to live with this pain. Pray and always have HOPE. No, no one has ever out-lived their usefullness. We can always repent for our sins and repair the wrongs that we may have caused. Not everyone does, but always have FAITH that they just might.

That parent NEVER did anything for you? And yet, you managed to survive infancy, early childhood, grow into an adolescent, and finally an adult with a family of your own...
Amazing...
Life belongs to God alone...it is for Him to say when someone has "outlived their usefulness", not for you, or for me, or anyone else.
Perhaps the purpose is to teach YOU tolerance? Sooner or later, that "sack of sh^t" will go the way of all the earth...meantime, your children are watching you and learning just how a grown child ought to deal with an aging parent...
Remember that, when you are the older parent, and your kid is tired of dealing with "that sack of sh^t"...

Who knows, at the rate we're going, by that time, society may allow the kid to put you out of your misery...and theirs........

Every Human being has been placed on this earth for a resaon.we are NOT the judges of weather they have outlived thier 'usefulness'.. Only The Lord can , and you may have noticed that sometimes , its almost as though aperson has been placed JUST to take care of certain situations for u and later they dissapear from your lives.
You may feel that way about someone, but if they are still inyour life, they are MEANT TO BE!!

I believe you are not responsible for them. I believe that if you leave them, they will still find a path for themselves, even if it seems like they won't, the change of you not being with them anymore, shifts the situation for them. And they must then react , which leads them down another path.

Do not feel bad, to leave others. We arrive here in a single physical body, not in many. We are only responsible for ourselves.

I believe that they and you and all, are Not here to be of "usefulness" to anyone but themselves. Because we have arrived on earth to be a "human being".

That word is not "human working" or "human doing" or "usefull human" we are called "human Being" Which means , that one just has to BE.

Every individual , JUST has to Be, without any worries of Doing anything. Either wise, when everyone is born, we would have tools attached to our bodies, and written contracts.

A child is not born with a hammer for an arm, to become a wood worker. Nor is one born with a written contract in hand, that states that they must take care of other babies.

I suggest, that , you move on, away from them. No matter whom they are.

I have felt that some people have outlived thier purpose, some people have because they never reached thier purpose and now they are just living to realize that. You never know, when they finally do, you may be sitting next to them, see thier tears and realize you have been putting off your purpose all along. That may be the only reason they did live was to realize thier failings and to renew your success. You just never know the greater plan......

To one answerer:
By the way. Religious people, maybe...
Spiritual people, no.
But who is anyone to really judge when no one has the whole picture.

No, I wish I could talk with my grandmother just one more time. Even when the body forgets how to move , there is love to be given, they have the time to watch the clouds and tell their great grands the stories of time gone by.

When the mind can no longer remember, they deserve our love in return until they cross over to the next world , where they will know all things and wait for us.

I am so sorry that you face this daily, I do not know what to tell you. I pray that you see in this time, some reason for serving the needs of this parent, even in a small way.
It makes me so glad that my mom is a kind generous, loving woman.
I will remember to thank her for that today, and to thank God for it also.

No. I think some people feel that way about themselves, which is sad. But to someone who loves you every minute of time that they have to spend with you is important and you are useful to them. No one should ever feel like they are so much excess baggage.Every life is precious and should be appreciated for as long as one has it.

No, not a concept that I subscribe too. What does usefulness have to do with their existence?

No such thing. Everybody has worth to God so long as they live on this earth, and they have worth to God when they leave this earth. The soul belongs to God.
