You can usually trust Dr. Mom! Usually the itching is because the scab is forming, and thats pulling on the flesh and skin around it. Just leave it scab over and don't pull the scab off. Also, try Neosporine - it'll help it heal faster. Neosporine Plus has a pain reliever that'll help with the itching or hurt. There are some bandaids out there, too, that have medication built into them to prevent the forming of scabs - the drawback with them is you have to have a bandaid on all the time till it heals.

My Mum told me that too! I've never really thought about whether it is true or not until reading your question. No doubt there will be some expert answers, but how about the following for a theory?

When the scab itches the normal/instinctive reaction is to scratch or rub the scab. Therefore the scab is loosened and eventually will fall off, exposing the almost healed skin to the fresh air. After a short time the skin is back to normal - or as near normal as the original wound allows.

I'm pretty sure this is true. In the final stages of healing the scab is getting ready to drop off and the joins to the new skin are breaking down. Hence itch.

I think it's true, I had a bite that I itched and itched and unfortunately took the skin off my leg, and then when the scab was almost ready to come off it became VERY itchy ... and sure enough it was healed underneath ... maybe I was just lucky, but damn it felt good for itching it, I hate itches!

Your mother was right. Score another one for moms everywhere! Itching is a sign of healing. Don't scratch it. If you can't stand the itch, think about something else.

when a scab itches it is because the damaged nerve endings are repairing themselves so it is normal but if you had excess itching it is usually an infection
